How the pandemic laid bare America’s diabetes crisis
COVID-19 has torn a particularly lethal path through the 1 in 10 Americans with diabetes, including many who never caught the virus. That's because when the pandemic hit, people with the chronic disease were already in worse shape than in years.
It took the deadly disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic to expose a deeper, more intractable U.S. public-health crisis: For more than a decade, the world’s richest nation has been losing the battle against diabetes.
Long before the pandemic, Kate Herrin was among the millions of Americans struggling to control their diabetes.
Her problems often stemmed from her government-subsidized medical insurance. Doctors routinely rejected her Medicaid plan, and she repeatedly ran out of the test strips she needed to manage her daily insulin injections. She cycled in and out of emergency rooms with dangerously high blood-sugar levels, or hyperglycemia.
Then COVID-19 hit. Herrin – poor and living alone – rarely left her apartment, ordering fast-food delivery instead of risking the grocery store. She stopped going in for regular lab tests. She had a harder time than ever securing medical supplies. Her health deteriorated further.
On Dec. 15, Herrin and Elicia Heaston, her best friend, were swapping messages on Facebook midday when Herrin abruptly dropped off the conversation. Heaston called Herrin’s phone and got no answer. When a few more hours passed without any word, Heaston and her husband drove from their home in rural West Alexandria, Ohio, to Herrin’s apartment nearby and pounded on the door. No lights were on, but they could hear the television.
Heaston called 911. When firefighters arrived, they found the 42-year-old dead on the bathroom floor. Herrin’s rescue dogs, Honey and Sugar, were lying quietly next to her.

The higher carb, low fat diet the FDA has recommended is a large part of the problem.
Just started reading about MSG and nitrates. Bad way to go.
ot oh, just picked it up today. Time to rethink this. Thanks.
“The coroner attributed the heart attack that killed Herrin to complications of type 2 diabetes.”
I was right on the edge my last blood test. Lost 50lbs, cut out 95% of sugars and 85% of my carbs (now under 50g/day) and walk 4-5 miles.
A1C is 5.0 last checked.
Most stories are.
Living on fast food and trying to control BS with insulin is an indicator that she had no clue how to reverse or control her disease with proper diet, exercise and fasting.
Many diabetics try to continue the eating habits that gave them T2 while trying to treat the resulting blood sugar problems with insulin.
It’s a downward spiral.
“agree total BS”
Have you seen the obesity in the Americans.
I sell employee benefits. 35 years ago 1 person had diabetes a n a 20 person group. Now it’s 8-10 people. All due to obesity
“ High Fructose corn syrup”
which the body stores as fat, because the body can’t adequately digest it.”
Sucrose (cane sugar) is made of one molecule of fructose joined with one molecule of glucose. The body starts breaking down sucrose into fructose and glucose as soon as it hits the mouth, but more quickly in the stomach.
If for some unusual genetic condition you might have, your body can’t digest fructose, then you also can’t digest cane sugar.
Average weight gain for an adult American during the past year is 29 lbs!!!!
The diabetes epidemic is a direct result of the “Food Pyramid” forced on us by the government. That, and the general destruction of the family. When I was a kid, my mother was working, and I had free access to the kitchen. Just a decade before, she was not working, and my older siblings had zero access to the kitchen. You simply did not eat between meals. You were hungry at mealtime.
If you want to do things right, ask the government what to do, and do the exact opposite.

The Venezuelans sent it here.
Science says you cannot create or destroy fat. You can only relocate it.
I meant that they cant see a doctor

They omitted saying the reason there are so many type 2 diabetics today is they keep lowering the threshold.
For example, many years ago if they took a readings below 140 after fasting overnight; you were OK.
Then it dropped to 130; then to 120 ; now they are using 100.
IMHO Using the 100 or lower measurement is going to make plenty of healthy people type 2 diabetics.

“Who on earth consults the government on how to eat?”
Every school in the country for beginners. You might want to learn a thing or two about the subject before you spout off.

Liquid Seed Oils, like canola and soybean oil, cause obesity. Add in sugar and refined carbs. The Doughnut is the killer food 🍩
I’m an Ophthalmologist. I’m seeing diabetic eye disease just sky-rocketing.
30 years ago, before the A1C, it was bad, but now it’s worse. I’m seeing sad, horrific cases.
Now I’m with a different practice with with a different group of patients. But I don’t think that alone explains the rise.
Perhaps if we stop lying to fat and obese people that they are beautiful, and awesome, and don’t need to change...
We're not fat - we're famine preppers. And if Biden continues as President, we're gonna get to test that theory.
