Evoking scenes from the movie Argo, staff at the U.S. embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan, have reportedly been directed to begin the process of destroying computers and sensitive documents in preparation to evacuate the outpost.
A memo obtained by National Public Radio outlines the steps American diplomats are taking:
The memo was written for staff at the embassy and shared with NPR on condition of anonymity.
Most will be evacuated by 3,000 U.S. troops on their way to Kabul to ensure a safe and orderly departure. The embassy will be evacuated and a very small consular staff will work in Kabul, the memo noted.
The embassy staffers were instructed to destroy sensitive documents and desktop computers before they leave, according to the document.
The memo comes after the Taliban's offensive toppled at least half of Afghanistan's provincial capitals in recent days and now stands just 30 miles outside Afghanistan's capital city.
First 3,000 U.S. troops en route to Kabul. Taliban now 30 miles from Afghan capital and could seize it as soon as tomorrow...or next month. U.S. military planning for full evacuation and closure of U.S. embassy, if necessary: U.S. officials— Lucas Tomlinson (@LucasFoxNews) August 13, 2021
The memo and the actions of staff at the Kabul embassy are a direct contradiction of what State Department spokesman Ned Price told reporters Thursday.
The situation at the US Embassy in #Kabul is more dire than what the State Department is saying. Mail has stopped. Nearly all employees are packing up and a very small number will head to another location. Staff are gearing up to destroy sensitive papers, computers, phones.— Tom Bowman (@TBowmanNPR) August 13, 2021
The "overall status has not changed" at the embassy in Kabul, Price said, adding that what definitely appears to be an evacuation "is not an evacuation."
Shall we brace ourselves to see dead Americans dragged through the streets again?
Be sure to have some helicopters on stand by so they can land on the roof at the very end!
Shades of Tehran 1978.
If only this information were on Hillary’s personal servers. They would be perfectly safe there.
Go back and look at the videos of Saigon when we left, people begging to leave only to be left behind as we abandoned them...
The Taliban is going to rightfully claim victory and seek to kill everyone who talked to US Forces, it will be a blood bath for those left behind....
Thanks again Joe.
They have to be told??
Our military in chaos. Brought to you by a stolen election. Darth Vader is sure running things like an idiot - too bad Darth Vader targets US and US military instead of our true enemies.
About 10 days late for that.
I don’t think even this admin would be dumb enough to allow that. And unlike the clown in the White House on Sept 11, 2012, they can’t blame anything on violating airspace and needing permission from anyone.
Yes...Left is hyping this for a reason, need bad guys
How Benghazi....
I well remember Saigon . . .
Any country that believes they can trust America to bail them out are nuts, but then; we really don’t belong being the policemen of the world. This is one of the reasons our country is in the mess it is right now - we are too busy policing the world, and not our own cities.
“...Thanks again Joe...”
The useless, communist POS was complicit in Saigon.
The useless, communist POS is complicit in Kabul.
History repeats itself with no lessons learned.
Useless communist POSs should never be allowed in govt..
The government and the Media have been working together to deceive us.
When they contradict each other, which one is more likely to have some truth in it?
“The embassy will be evacuated and a very small consular staff will work in Kabul, the memo noted.”
For what reason?!
Under normal circumstances, I could see maintaining a small presence there - but these are not normal circumstances.
Does that State Dept think that a small consular presence will be any less of an irritant to the Taliban than a full embassy presence would?
I understand that by keeping a small consular presence it shelters us from the “cut and run” accusation but it endangers the remaining US personnel there.
Lastly, how effective would a small consular presence be? It’s not like they’re going to be overwhelmed with work or expected to attend diplomatic functions or attended events sponsored by the Kabul Lions Club.
The 3,000 troops will mostly arrive on Sunday. You would think the Taliban would move on the embassy and airport.
kinda surprised they don’t send hillary clinton over there to wipe everything clean...
