SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California's Asian population grew by 25% in the past decade, making it the fastest growing ethnic group in the nation's most populous state, according to new data from the U.S. Census Bureau released Thursday.
California's white population plummeted by 24% between 2010 and 2020, confirming California is one of three states — along with New Mexico and Hawaii — where whites are not the largest ethnic group.
Hispanics surpassed whites as California's largest ethnic group in 2014. The Census data show California's Hispanic population grew by 11% to 15.5 million people, making up just shy of 40% of the state's nearly 40 million residents.
But it was the Asian population that had the biggest percentage gain over the past decade. California now has more than 6 million people of Asian descent — more than the total population of most other states.
Ten years ago, none of California's 58 counties counted Asians as their largest ethnic group. Now, two do: Alameda County, which includes the cities of Oakland and Berkeley, and Santa Clara County, home to San Jose — the nation's 10th most-populous city — and the technology capitol of Silicon Valley.
“I think the story nationwide focuses primarily on the Hispanic population, but in California ... I think the Asian population, in particular related to the growth in the younger age groups, is sort of a major driver of factors as to why we see this large increase over the past 10 years,” said Noli Brazil, a demographer at the University of California-Davis.

Last time I checked, Spaniards are white.

That’ll be ethnic Chinese and Indians. If there’s any hope of California ever becoming a Republican state again, it’ll have to be through them. Conservative whites are fleeing the state in droves - all that’s left here are white liberals and Latinos.

I have a two friends that immigrated here from Colombia. They are both “whiter” than I am, yet they are officially “hispanic”. The entire hispanic designation is junk - it is literally based on the language someone speaks, it isn’t a race.
More and more white people are ticking the Hispanic box whenever possible to jump on the protected class train. Same with children of mixed white/asian parents. Part of the decline in whites is simply that it doesn’t change to check the “white” box any longer.
It would be nice if they had a breakdown of which Asian countries they came from. “Asians” can mean a lot of different countries.
Thats not really true. I would gather the vast majority are from India.
Would you have said the same thing about Japanese immigrants in California in 1942?
It’s good that CA is finally going to get some folks who are actually talented, hard working, and honest for a change.
I think your terminology is old. Coming from a Spanish speaking country is the normal definition. Hispanic can be Native American or black. In fact Caucasian is the lowest of the three populations in most Hispanic countries. I think the US government will accept Brazil as well which is not even a Spanish speaking country. In many Hispanic countries blacks out number other groups.
Ca has always been the drop off point for Asians. Are we supposed to be surprised?
And Asians were yet another group where Trump improved the Republican vote tally last year. The white women (whether college educated or Peg Bundy types) is the group to be scared of.
Do not forget the Chinese “birthing centers” here for them to squirt out instant American citizens to pave the way for their invasion.
Latinos are culturally western and racially diverse and have voted a higher percentage for GOP candidates in the past two presidential elections than Asians. Asians are no more “naturally conservative” than Jews.
And the largest group is of racially mixed people - the Spanish, Portuguese and French colonies did not have the hang ups about race mixing that the Anglo Saxons did.
Lots of Vietnamese in the Orange County area. Hard working, but bad drivers.
