Bikers and motorcycle enthusiasts have descended on South Dakota's Black Hills for the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, again raising concerns that COVID-19 will rapidly spread among the hundreds-of-thousands expected at the event.
Last year's rally drew widespread criticism, as maskless attendees gathered en masse, even as most in-person events were canceled around the country. This year, vaccines have made more gatherings possible — but Sturgis still stands out.
Some recent large-scale events, including the music festival Lollapalooza, have required attendees to show proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test and to wear a mask. Because the nation is currently battling growing cases as the highly transmissible delta variant circulates, even those precautions have been called insufficient. But health precautions at Sturgis are optional.

How is that possible that so many new people got into the biking life since last year? It is a well known fact that the ‘rona offed everyone who went in 2020, right? /s
Any health expert seeking control of a 500,000 biker rally ain’t much of an expert.
Well the article did come from usaToday so.............
The media is going all out to link Sturgis to death from covid, like they did last year.
Oh, I thought they were talking about the Barak Party.
Last year they were ringing the “super spreader” alarm over Sturgis, but in the end, they could only trace a handful of cases to that event. One guy in Minnesota who was in his 60s, overweight, and diabetic died after being diagnosed with COVID after attending the rally.
But if you’re dancing to boy band music and waving your hands around like a tyrannosaurus on Martha’s Vineyard, then you wont have problems from China.
No, that was a piker rally not a Biker rally. Sure would suck if that turned out to be a super spreader event. Surprised that MV didn’t flip over with all those extra folks on the island. I hear the great whites (can I say that) were ‘circling back’ just offshore.
SDHP: Fatal motorcycle crashes, fatalities doubled during 2020 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally
RAPID CITY, S.D. — In the final numbers from the 2020 Sturgis Rally, the South Dakota Highway Patrol reported a total of four fatal motorcycle crashes, which was twice the amount of fatal accidents in the 2019 Rally.
With the four fatal crashes came five fatalities as compared to two last year.
"Injury accidents were up (56 in 2020; 52 in 2019). A total of 106 crashes were reported during the Rally, up 13.
DUI arrests were down from last year (145 in 2020; 171 in 2019), as were Felony Drug Arrests (126 in 2020; 131 in 2019) and citations (1,334 in 2020; 1,336 in 2019.)
Authorities seized over four times the amount of cash in this year’s Rally ($18,763 in 2020; $4,044 in 2019).
STURGIS! Only in America!
I can’t wait for the pious lectures from the Stephen Colberts of this world; he can dance and mix with hundreds of fellow leftists, maskless, in Martha’s Vineyard yet they will down bikers who stay out in the open. As Jesus said, “O ye hypocrites!”
Yeah, they should take their lesson from BLM and anti-fa when pressure from the CDC caused them to cancel all their in-person "events."
I’m getting whipsawed!
~600+ jammed into a tent for a birthday: OK
Teacher in a classroom: NOT OK
400,000 jammed into and fenced-in to Grant Park: OK
700,000 ride motorcycles through a city: NOT OK
Does not appear to add up?
You swerved into something…just how much longer before some little dick short guy takes offense and fires up his fax machine sending out pressers complaining that the common name for the Carcharodon carcharias is racist. After all we don’t have a Great Black or Brown Shark, besides the Great White Sharks swim in packs called Kleagles. Gotta go!
Sunlight is the best disinfectant.
Let the puppies breathe in the sunlight.
“...even as most in-person events were canceled around the country....” Well, we had Street Vibrations motorcycle rally in Reno about a month ago which seemed pretty crowded and successful and now Hot August Nights is wrapping up today after a week. Thousands of classic cars and additional folks in town. Even with the new revised mask requirements indoors kicking in the casinos seemed packed.
Was not a super spreader event last year.
