Column: Trump will get millions in post-presidential benefits, thanks to Harry Truman’s lies
Los Angeles Times ^ | August 5 2021 | Michael Hiltzik

“The fact of the matter is that when he left the White House, Truman was loaded,” says Paul Campos, a law professor at the University of Colorado Boulder who has done what no Truman historians seem to have bothered to do — examine the financial records in the Truman archives in Independence, Mo. “He wasn’t just comfortably well off. He was Rich with a capital ‘R,’ and way into the 1%.”

Once you get past all the anti-Trump fuming at the start, it gets interesting about Truman's finances in and out of office.

4 years at 400000 per year donated by President Trump. It will take awhile for his Presidential pension to make up for that.

I was once a fan of Harry Truman. But once I began my journey into the communist infiltration of this country beginning in the Thirties until it began to decline in the Fifties when HUAC and then Joseph McCarthy made it disreputable to be affiliated with Communists, the actions of Harry Truman appalled me.

At a time when he should have been a champion of this country and protecting its interests, he was far, FAR more interested in protecting the Democrat Party.

His actions in impeding, obstructing, and doing everything he could to block the McCarthy investigations were disgusting.

He is no hero of mine, even divorced from his finances.

And Truman obstructed those investigations, because they would have been overwhelmingly damning to the Democrat Party.

Today, the damage of any investigations would not be so one-sided, but back then, they damn well were.

The Democrat Party is and was The Party of Treason, and today, they have help from bought off Republicans like Mitch McConnell and Mitt Romney.

When I first heard that Truman and Eisenhower hated each other, I wondered who the bad guy was.

Precisely. And I couldn't help chuckle about the scribe's assessment of Truman's presidency buried near the end of the article:

. . . despite a record of accomplishment that could fairly be judged as mediocre.

The only Democrat president who came close to the mediocre standard in the last century was JFK. And yet that still makes them outstanding as Democrat presidents go.

FDR's long praised leadership skills for leading us during the war is more than cancelled by his inept prolonging of the Great Depression to the extent that it required a war for us to make a full recovery and his treaties for postwar giveaways of vast tracts of territory to a Communist enemy.

How odd. Someone in the press seems to think Truman was a Republican…

Truman made mistakes. He said so himself. He said “If I could take back anything, it would be the formation of the CIA, it was my biggest mistake”. That being said, he played so major league ball and made perhaps the biggest decisions of the last century for the free world, when he stepped in. Truman was already surrounded by Roosevelt communists when he arrived, with virtually no knowledge of the major projects in the US or war at the time. He had to face down Stalin and Mao day one of his arrival.

Him being rich, well he didn’t sure didn’t flaunt it or ask for anything government. The reason Truman is being trashed now is that all the Democrats have enriched themselves being POTUS or VPOTUS, and only Trump lost half his wealth serving. That fact sticks in the gut of Democrats so much that they reach back to try and smear one of their own.

I figure not many could have done as well as Truman did, with what he started with, filling in during a huge war, with everything stacked against him. He was loyal to party, probably to a fault, but the buck did stop at his desk.

As duran pointed out, if you set all the Trump hatred aside, it is not a bad article.

Point is, this author wants the Former Presidents Act negated, and the inescapable conclusion from his verbiage is that Trump already has too much money, and giving him even a cent of taxpayer money is a crime.

What is largely unsaid, is that Carter has his money, and Bush and Obama already have more than enough, the main focus is to deny Trump.

Nixon supposedly left office broke due to Watergate. It might be interesting to compare his financial records when leaving office with Truman. Nixon’s situation is somewhat believable since it was so fashionable then to hate him (and still is !). I do caveat this with the fact that Nixon was a professional politician and few if any of that species leave office in worse financial shape then when they enter.

, the author proves two points:

1. Truman was rich when he died and at least the majority of that money came from book contracts (one worth $600,000).

2. Truman had at least $50,000 when he left the presidency, and he got it from an untaxed expense account.

The author also asserts that Truman was rich when he left office but he doesn’t show that Truman had anything other than the $50,000. Does $50,000 alone make your rich back then?

The author also suspiciously doesn’t describe the terms of what he calls the expense account despite saying that the terms were voted by congress and therefore would be public. Was the expense account (that’s the authors name for it) like a per dime where you keep what you don’t spend? Or like a corporate expense account where you need to show receipts to get reimbursed? That would be directly relevant to the implication that Truman stole the money but the author leaves it out. Suspicios

A bipartisan measure paring back the benefits passed both houses of Congress in 2016 but was vetoed by Barack Obama, who asserted that it would interfere with contractual arrangements

Truman did some very good things: he took the measure of Stalin immediately and did not have the trust in “Uncle Joe” that FDR had cultivated. Second, he did not hesitate to end WW2 by dropping the atomic bombs - it had to be done and he said he had the best sleep of any night the evening he ordered it done. Third, he overrode his entire Cabinet by his one vote to resupply Berlin in the Berlin Airlift. Fourth, he integrated the armed forces - you can’t ask a man to die for his country and then tell him that he has to be in a separate unit bc of his race.
