The author also asserts that Truman was rich when he left office but he doesn’t show that Truman had anything other than the $50,000. Does $50,000 alone make your rich back then?

$50K in 1952 did not make one rich, certainly not when compared with the windfalls that the Clintons and the Obamas - even a VP Al Gore - reaped when leaving office. Truman had a $600K book deal? I believe Obamas was in the forty-fifty million range. Truman went back to Independence , Missouri, and lived a quiet life. Compare and contrast that with Obama's 60th birthday bash last night at his $12 million Martha's Vineyard estate.

Biden - $9 million? I seriously doubt that.

So Truman was enriched himself while bankrupting the nation by re-imposing the New Deal following WWII.

It was so bad that the American people in 1946 elected the first Republican Congress since 1930.

Truman was an economic moron.

“My ‘Truman’ trashing ‘professor”? What brought that kind of response in your post? Because I believe that Truman was a political hack who cared more about protecting the Democrat Party than National Security? Because I hold Truman in low regard for valid and provable reasons?

I just want to be sure I understand the tenor of your post. Personally, I think the author, is a turd, and his source is a Leftist dipstick. But that is not my point of contention with Truman. To me, it is simply a data point that is not out of line with what I think of the man. Additionally, I don’t know if it the content of the article is true or false. But it certainly sounds like the author and his source, as much Leftist scum as they are, did original research. Never heard of anyone else delving into Truman’s income in that way.

MarvinStinson, before I give you a comprehensive answer to your post, I just want to be clear: Are you saying that communists who were infiltrated into nearly all levels of government between 1940 to 1950 had zero political influence?

I get the impression you think I am referring to people who attended a communist party meeting in college or something like that.

I am not.

The people I described in my post at #29 who had their government personnel files consolidated at the White House back in 1950-1954 under the personal direction of then President Truman, were people who were either direct agents of the Soviet Union or were people possibly at risk of providing the Soviets with information due to their affiliations with the Communist Party in a form.

And keep in mind: What Truman did was exactly the same thing we conservatives excoriated the Clintons for when they consolidated files and records and hid them in the White House so they couldn’t be accessed.

And to be clear about McCarthy: he was not investigating these people because he wanted them put on trial and thrown in prison, which is what the vast majority of Americans (possibly including you, but I hope not) think. McCarthy simply thought (and has been proven correct retrospectively) that people who belonged to the Communist Party in ANY of its various forms should NOT be allowed to work in sensitive government positions. I happened (and I think not coincidentally) that a good number of the people he investigated were later proven to be actual spies for the Soviet Union.

So, please clarify for me what you meant in your post. And if you aren’t going to consider my response respectfully, let me know and I won’t waste my time, or yours.

DiogenesLamp, I am not sure I understand your post in response to mine at #5, could you clarify it for me?

Yes, he was indeed that. His claim to fame was the “Truman Committee” that investigated fraud and waste in military contracts. (An aspect of his career I applaud and have no issues with)

2016 data, IIRC

“Joe Biden Wealth Details: When his term as Vice President ended, Joe Biden’s last financial disclosure pegged his net worth at $1.5 million. For many years before becoming VP, he would frequently refer to himself as one of the “poorest” members of congress, or “middle class Joe”, with a net worth less than $500,000. In the years after leaving the White House he earned significant income mainly from speeches and book royalties, peaking in 2017 with income of $11 million. Between 2016 and 2019 alone Joe and Jill earned a shade under $17 million.”

That’s what your Truman trashing “professor” Paul Campos wrote. I quoted him.

You are so beyond the pale in your hate Truman obssession that you can’t read and comprehend simple language.

No need for the uncivil response. I did not insult you, but you felt the emotional need to respond in that way.

I can see don’t know much about that era, or are too emotionally invested in what you were taught in grade school to have any idea of what I am referring to.

That is one way to go through life, good luck with that.

No need to puncture your bubble, so I won’t elaborate.

I normally encounter the phrase "The Democrat party is the party of treason" in the context of secession prior to the civil war.

If you were not intending it as a reference to the civil war, then I apologize for assuming you were.

POTUS Trump left DC with much less Wealth than when he arrived unlike most of his predecessors. Talk about sacrificing your Name, your Family and your Wealth for the Republic.

DiogenesLamp: "The Corruption of Washington DC. How did this stuff get started? "

It started when Democrats took over rule in Washington, DC, after 1801.
Democrat corruption was one of the things which helped elect Republican majorities for the first time ever, in 1860.

Heh, absolutely it was not in the context of the Civil War! I was referring to the FDR Administration up to today.

You know, one of the things I enjoy about Free Republic is having dialogue with people who are interested in discussing an issue. So many people (including many on this forum) seem to be incapable of discussing issues like adults.

I appreciate it when I see a post I don’t understand, and ask for clarification like a reasonable person would in NORMAL conversation, and get a reasonable response with a real clarification.

Civil discourse.

Too often when you ask for clarification in an online discussion, someone bites your head off or insults you as if you were children on a playground. “Get the s**t out of your ears” or worse. I always, try, sometimes unsuccessfully, to communicate with people online as if they were sitting next to me.

So...thank you.

I have no problem with Truman using his service in some fashion to boost his career. If I recall, he didn’t exaggerate or inflate his experiences, and he served...he was entitled, IMO, to leverage his service to his advantage.

Interesting, you can see from my Freep Page that Joseph McCarthy was one of my heroes, and he served in the Pacific in WWII. (He didn’t have to, he was a judge in Wisconsin at the time, the youngest ever to become one in that state and was thus exempt) but he joined the USMC at the age of 34 and because of his college education, was given a commission where he worked as an intelligence officer in the South Pacific in a Marine dive bomber squadron. He requested (and was granted) permission to fly as the back-seater in SBD Dauntlesses and went on 12 combat missions.

He was excoriated by Leftists (read the Wikipedia entries to see how with information that mysteriously never came out while McCarthy was alive, and largely from second hand accounts in the decades after. This conglomeration of info is expected from Wikipedia which is a worthwhile source of information if regarding the date of birth or death, but little more)

The same people who denigrated McCarthy’s service were the exact same people who celebrated a Silver Star awarded to LBJ which Ann Coulter humorously and accurately referred to it as the least deserved and most celebrated Silver Star ever awarded.

It is the kind of hypocrisy that we see from people (generally on the Left, but not always) who defend the Clinton’s illegal handling of government records where they sequestered records in the White House, but think that is just fine for Truman to have done so.

Ain't that the truth? :)

Too often when you ask for clarification in an online discussion, someone bites your head off or insults you as if you were children on a playground. “Get the s**t out of your ears” or worse. I always, try, sometimes unsuccessfully, to communicate with people online as if they were sitting next to me.

A lot of conservatives are angry and disheartened and feel like lashing out. All they need is someone they can perceive as an enemy, and sometimes a minor disagreement or a misunderstanding is enough to trigger an outburst.

I have always wished people would be more deliberative and less reactionary, and some people on this website tend to be. Bullsnipe and "x" have argued with me a long time and though they occasionally get emotional, they are usually level headed and not given to lashing out or making strictly emotional arguments. I wish more were like them.

So...thank you.

You're welcome. I try to be civil. I don't always succeed, but I do make the effort! :)

Yes.

To me, the important thing is to at least try, because even the best of us can get hot-headed.

When you fail, you try to pick yourself back up and not do it again. I have tried after heated exchanges to mend fences, and in only once case of a Freeper with whom I had an extremely heated exchange and who was stalking me from thread to thread (and who hasn’t posted on FR in a year or two) when I tried to mend fences, had the equivalent of pulling back a bloody stump.

But it is important to try.
