Former Oregon school custodian accused of planning 'mass casualty event,' police say

A former high school custodian in Medford, Oregon, is accused of attempted 2nd degree murder and other criminal charges after police say he "made significant steps to carry out a mass casualty event."

Kristopher Clay, 24, is being held in the Jackson County Jail on $2 million bail following his initial court hearing Thursday.

The charges also include attempted 1st degree assault, two counts of unlawful use of a weapon and tampering with physical evidence, according to a news release from the Medford Police Department.

CNN's attempts to contact Clay have been unsuccessful. It is not clear if he has an attorney.

Clay arrived at the lobby of the MPD police station on July 20 and told an officer he was having homicidal thoughts with plans to carry them out, according to the news release.

While Clay was taken to the behavioral health unit of a hospital under protective custody -- where he would remain until his arrest Wednesday -- police obtained search warrants for three residences. Medford police said they discovered ammunition, firearms, tactical gear and written material that MPD Lt. Mike Budreau called "journals, if you will, or manifestos" during a Thursday afternoon news conference.

"The high school was at least one of the targets," said Budreau. "There were others."

To this guys credit, he walked in to a police station to tell them how he was feeling and what he was planning to do.

Had he said it was an ICE facility, he would be walking free.

CNN. I will believe it when it comes from a credible source.

Minor point, but how the hell do they charge “tampering with evidence”?

So, basically what we see here is a man being charged with a thought crime.

Bad charge. The only thing this poor wretch did was to turn himself in to authorities seeking help. I don’t see the “attempted” charge. Gotta wonder if he knows any FBI agents, tho.

The guy shows up asking for help BEFORE committing any crime and they arrest him?

Is there more to this story?

“So, basically what we see here is a man being charged with a thought crime.”

Ludicrous.

He stated his intent and the search warrants were issued based on that. The searches then showed he had the means and had been planning/preparing to carry out his intent...as he likely stated to the cops.

Your logic would have sent him home to fester.

Depending on his exact words to the cops, the warrants may or may not have been legal. A court will decide that.

Same way they charge Chauvin with murder.

Also to his credit, he did not walk into an FBI office to tell them of his ideas. If you get my drift...

He was probably tired of the FBI urging him on.

I wonder if he was or just stopped taking prozac, ritalin, zoloft..

Almost every mass shooter in the past 20 years has that one thing in common. Mood altering drugs.

Good thing he came to his senses and went to the cops, guess we’ll have to see where it goes.

The charges may or may not stick, but at least it let’s him be kept locked up until a hearing.

Otherwise, the soft on crime Oregon system would cut him loose on his own recognizance with a hearing set for 2023 or so.
