The number of coronavirus infections over the last few days has put Israel at a crossroads that requires quick decisions. The public has largely been understanding of the government’s restrained policies during the fourth wave of the virus, and experts have praised the professionalism of the discussions and the decision-making process.
But due to the soaring incidence of the virus, the government’s stated policy of “living with the virus” is beginning to give way to familiar and harsher measures that have a major impact on daily life and the economy.
On Tuesday, the coronavirus cabinet was meeting once again. Earlier, Prime Minister Naftali Bennett told the heads of the other parties in his governing coalition that additional restrictions must be imposed now, since in another 20 days or so, Israel is likely to have 800 seriously ill patients.
Israel had pinned its hope on vaccinations. And until now, they had proven themselves, resulting in a steep drop in coronavirus cases when lockdowns hadn’t worked.
But Bennett, like Health Ministry officials, understands that vaccines alone aren’t enough now, given the pace of vaccinations and the vaccine’s reduced effectiveness against the delta variant. Even though more than 60 percent of Israelis are vaccinated and a campaign to give senior citizens booster shots has begun, incidence of the virus is rising too rapidly to be ignored.

The “vaccines” are working. They are a cure for Wuhan flu hysteria, not a vaccine for the flu. Hysteria sufferers who get the vaccine overcome their hysteria and drop their precautions thus get the flu and help reach herd immunity. The success of the vaccinations is measured by the number of vaccinated who get the flu.

A comparison of Sweden with similar population size sez it all. Sweden - no lockdown, Israel - lockdowns. Sweden 10 - 15% vaccinated, Israel 95% 'jabbed'. Sweden recent deaths - 15; Israel 71. This is from my failing memory, but essentially correct.
Yes, the drop in the UK coincides with the end of school year ... so I suspect it is because the 4-10 year-olds are now mixing nothing like as much as four weeks ago. I never understood why I was on lockdown but it was ok for 200 juniors to mix in a school playground.
Per the article, Israel expects 800 seriously ill from COVID, 20 days from now.
Medium-term hospitalization (and fatality) trends based off case(s) trends have been respectfully accurate for well over a year. If anything, Worldometers’ projections of fatalities, in many countries and the world as a whole, made this time last year, were actually slightly low.
So, I’m gonna guess the 800 is a reasonable estimate. How much of a burden this would be for Israeli hospitals / how much spare capacity they have I do not know. Perhaps the worry is that if their hospitals are stressed, Hamas (etc.) will pick that opportunity to go on a real rampage.
