Flick told the judge he bought the tank as scrap in Britain in 1977, and had even paid the Bundeswehr £25,000 to repair the engine.

But he agreed to plead guilty to breaching the War Weapons Control Act and was handed a 14-month suspended prison sentence and ordered to pay 250,000 euros (£213,000).

Although the pensioner is facing a colossal fine, the judge was swayed not to confiscate the tank or the AA gun, but ordered that they must be sold within the next two years.

"Two years to get the museum going."

Yup!

"Police stumbled on the huge haul in 2015 when carrying out a search for Nazi-era bronze sculptures which reportedly decorated his back garden.

...

Under German law it is illegal to display Nazi symbols unless they are kept for educational or historical reasons. "

“Nanny state jerks.”

The country of Germany allows permission for a German citizen to own up to two firearms. The ‘permission’ can be rescinded for minor offenses and the firearms may never be reinstated to the rightful owner.

Germany. It’s another country altogether. They have their own laws and shit...I think an AA gun and tank likely violate the existing German laws...

That is what I was thinking. This guy could end up WAY ahead even after the fine.

Lack of ammunition has long decommissioned those weapons.

The barrel on the Panther is a reweld and cannot safely be fired.

Never-the-less, the Panther is composed of the rare element unobtainium and should sell for $10 million or more.

Nothing like an 88 to deal with those pesky ground rodents.

Maybe someone with time-in-country could clarify, but — hello, autobahn; drinking age? What drinking age? — I don’t recall Germany being this anal before the EU.

They now treat homeschooling families almost as well as Hitler treated Jews.

“No need to send him to prison. Sell the items and apply the proceedings against his fine.”

Sell it, give the Pensioner a goodly amount of the proceeds and THANK HIM for taking care and storing it in good shape all these years!

Years ago I saw a news report on 60 Minutes (I believe) in which the US Army has thousands of art items from the Nazi Era in storage. Kept in perfect shape they are to be returned to Germany long after the stench of nazism is past.

“Art from the Nazi era” is not necessarily Nazi art. The Germans in that time made some spectacular statues and objects of art that on their own did not have anything to do with the NSDAP.

Even if it was Nazi art, so long as he kept it to himself then what was the harm?

When it came to building tanks the Germans were never content to build just one type of a particular tank. They would build several variations of a type.

In the Mark V Panther they built no less than 3.

This one appears to be a Mark V “G’ model. They produced 3,100 of them.

I’ve always thought the German Panther tank was totally cool looking.
