When communicating in mostly white settings, politically conservative Black and Latinx Americans use words associated with competence more often than their liberal counterparts, distancing themselves from negative racial stereotypes, according to a new study by Yale social psychologist Cydney Dupree.
The study, published in the journal Nature Human Behavior, combined several experiments to show that Black and Latinx conservatives, specifically those who are less concerned with social and economic inequality ("hierarchy-based conservatives"), are more likely to adopt language associated with power, status, and ability than liberals when addressing white people or operating in predominantly white spaces, including the halls of Congress.
"Despite common misconceptions, Black and Latinx Americans hold varied political beliefs," said Dupree, an assistant professor of organizational behavior at Yale School of Management. "Those who are more conservative—specifically, those not so concerned about inequality—tend to distance themselves from their racial ingroup.
"I predicted that, when talking to white people, Black and Latinx conservatives would distance themselves from negative ingroup stereotypes, such as those labeling them as lower in competence. My findings supported that prediction. When addressing whites, Black and Latinx conservatives use language associated with competence more frequently than their liberal counterparts, reversing stereotypes."
Another example of arrogant white liberals trying to tell minorities what they should think.
It's confusing because it's written with a subtle air of disbelief and sadness, because liberals don't believe such behavior is natural or desirable.
Such facts eff up their thesis or next sociological paper. It's like when they learn some Amazonian tribe has been polluted with the white man's medicine or tools.
It sounds like straight up racism to me. “Smart black people don’t want to be around dumb black people”? Sorry Charlie. Most smart people don’t want to be around dumb people. Full stop. It’s got nothing to do with race.
They speak English instead of spanglish or ebonics.
Yup. You have different accents? You did, didn't you? You little snake. You were like different people. "Your family's dug into the Southie projects like ticks. Three-decker men at best. You, however, grew up on the North Shore, huh? Well, la-di-da. You were kind of a double kid, I bet, right? Huh? One kid with your old man, one kid with your mother. You're upper-middle class during the weeks, then you're droppin' your "R"s and you're hangin' in the big, bad Southie projects with your daddy, the donkey on the weekends. I got that right?
(Think that will confuse them into cognitive dissonance, mixing "cultural imperialist", "binary gender" along with making their actions "Germanic"?)
Big surprise.
Black and Latino conservatives are more intelligent that Black and Latino liberals.
No different that WHITES.
Jem Finch: "Cal, why do you talk n*****-talk to the—to your folks when you know it's not right?"
Calpurnia:[…] "Suppose you and Scout talked colored-folks' talk at home it'd be out of place, wouldn't it? Now what if I talked white-folks' talk at church, and with my neighbors? They'd think I was puttin' on airs to beat Moses."
Jem: "But Cal, you know better,"
Calpurnia: "It's not necessary to tell all you know. It's not ladylike—in the second place, folks don't like to have somebody around knowin' more than they do. It aggravates 'em. You're not gonna change any of them by talkin' right, they've got to want to learn themselves, and when they don't want to learn there's nothing you can do but keep your mouth shut or talk their language."
Latinx? Comox hablex Latinxo. No comprendex estex cacax stupidex.
Yeah, "lemme axe you a question" is a sure-fire indicator of someone's education level.
Exactly what they are doing..The documentary UNCLE TOM put it perfectly.....
I pronounce it "La Twinks". I guess that goes against a culture of Machismo, but I don't care. I say Hispanic if I'm being polite (which I usually am).
It’s culturism, not racism. You can change your culture but not your skin color.

“Latinx”...a made up word by the Left *not* used by actual Latinos that is also disrespectful to their culture and language.
“Latinx” conservative? Never met one.
The inherent bias and stupidity is evident in the title.
I can’t tell if it is meant as a hit piece, but to me, it feels like a subtle hit piece.
***Assuming that the original aim is to be a hit piece, that would place it in the realm of a well-written article. Takes a lot of skill to write a hit piece that even wary folks have trouble identifying it as a hit piece.
Any study or “news” that contains the made up word “latinx” is garbage. THAT’S RACIST.”
ROTFLinx!
However liberals always talk down to their audience. I ain’t no ways tired she said feigning a negro dialect. Bammy did the same as he shucked and jived when speaking at a liberal black church.
Second, this not necessarily a "hit piece." I did a background check (sort of like a credit/history check on potential tenants) on Professor Dupree. She developed and validated three race-status association measures, so this is her "brand" in academia. Her hypothesis is that people selectively alter language and syntax for their audience. We can debate the merits of her measures (that'll require more research). But she's not unbalanced in her research.
White liberals—including Democratic presidential candidates speaking on the campaign trail—engage in a competence downshift: using fewer words related to competence (e.g., “assertive”, “competitive”) when speaking to a Black (versus White) audience, in a likely well-meaning, if patronizing attempt reverse stereotypes that label White Americans as dominant.
Black conservatives, in contrast, engage in a competence upshift: using more words related to high competence when speaking to White audiences in Congress, on Twitter, and during one-on-one introductions, in a likely attempt to impress White audiences by reversing stereotypes that label Black Americans as incompetent.
Women in high-profile leadership positions also reverse stereotypes via language. In an intersectional analysis of White, Black, and Latina women’s speech, I find that women in politics use more words related to power than their male colleagues in Congress and on Twitter. However, this effect is unique to White women, who are more likely than Black women to be stereotyped as submissive. This behavior has consequences: The more women reference high power at work, the more the media describes them as powerful but cold, and more likely they are to be rejected by constituents.
Personally, I don't find any of this to be offensive research. In fact, the findings from her research is that white liberals "talk down" to minorities, black conservatives "talk up" to white audiences, and women "talk masculine" to the public.
Now, in and of itself, the immediate response is "well, duh." Thus, leftists' chameleon-like language choices are proven by Prof. Dupree.
The deeper question is, does this language-shift actually signal an underlying disgust? We've known for years that leftists really don't like minorities unless they can be used. Therefore, is a leftists' language-shift reflective of a deeply-held belief that minorities are "stupid" and won't get my message if I talk like I do in the salon?
Similarly, if black conservatives (BC) also language-shift when talking to a group of whites, does this suggest that the BC fears that whites will dismiss them if they "talk black"?
I'd even go further, that "Yankees" adjust their syntax when talking in the South, and that some sotherners will temper their dialect when North of the Mason-Dixon line. Does that mean anything?
It's all worth considering on a Sunday, and I don't think it is a hit-piece necessarily. It is likely the researcher is left-of-center (her characterization of liberals' shifting as "likely well-meaning" is a giveaway) but she hasn't gone after conservatives only.
