Gymnastics superstar Simone Biles took a cue from tennis pro Naomi Osaka by pulling out of the team final after a shock error on her first event, insisting that she needed to 'focus on her mental health' because 'there is more to life than just' sport.
Speaking about her sensational exit from competition, which cleared the way for Team USA's Russian rivals to claim gold in a dramatic upset, the 24-year-old revealed that it came as a result of her personal mental health struggles and her desire to prioritize her 'wellbeing'.
'To focus on my wellbeing,' she told reporters of her reasons for pulling out of the competition following a sensational flub on the vault, echoing the statement issued by Naomi, 23, when she pulled out of the French Open earlier this year because of her own mental health struggles.
Shrugging, Simone added: 'And you know, there's more to life than just gymnastics.
'It is very unfortunate that it has to happen at this stage because I definitely wanted this Olympics to go a little bit better but again, we'll take it one day at a time and we're going to see how the rest goes.'
The gymnast also insisted that her decision to pull out of the competition after just one event - when she was due to take part in all four - was made, in part, to help her team, saying that she 'didn't want to risk the team medal' with 'her screw up'.
'I thought it was best that these girls took over the job which they absolutely did,' she continued. 'They are Olympic silver medalists now and they should be really proud of themselves now for how well they did last minute.'

Huge difference between pulling out last minute from an individual competition, and doing the same from a team competition. I imagine she won’t get much blowback from this because, well...you know. But she probably should.
Gee, she was “Mentally fit” two weeks ago when she qualified to be in the Olympics..she was happy as a clam then..she is a total fraud..and I used to have respect for her..she straight up quit, cause she knew she couldn’t win so she decided to take the quitting way out..you can bet she will be “Mentally fit” when the singles competition comes around, all of a sudden she will be cured of her mental boo boos
The middle of a team event at the Olympics is the best time to be a selfish narcissist and ensure the focus will remain her.

It’s really strange how this is being reported. I’ve heard some reports that claim it’s a “medical issue”, others that say “mental health issue”.
From an optics perspective, it seems Miss Biles isn’t doing herself any favors. Americans tend to not like it when they perceive a quitter or sore loser.
in an NBC puff-piece interview July 26, she mentioned how hard it has become to keep up the constant training, deal with the constant injuries, and how her body has less energy compared to the olympics 5 years ago.
I found it surprisingly downbeat for NBC coverage and no one commented on it.
It clearly showed her true mindset though.

True. I think if you have to “focus” on your mental health your ready for the loony bin.
I believe there’s a serious mental health crisis on the horizon, especially for younger folks. I’m sure being a high-profile, elite athlete puts a lot more stress on a person, but it seems like most younger folks just can’t handle life.
And I completely blame social media. All the “bad stuff” about life is right there, every day, bombarding folks constantly. There’s no down time, at all.

She clearly was rattled by her first performance. But to up and quit on her team, wow.
So she’s so messed up that she bailed on the entire competition? Holy cow.

Simone has certainly acquired her own Gold Medals along the way....makes no sense she would abandon her team at of all places the Olympics! More to this than her mental health.
