For whatever it is worth - despite some miscues - Macron has come out strong against the statue tearing down madness and all that it represents as well as against Turkey and beekeeper suits. So he’d be a quote-unquote “conservative” by US standards imho.

You make a fair point. Macron has surprised on the upside quite a few times lately. Maybe he’s starting to drift a little to the right. Or maybe he’s just trying to counter Marine Le Pen‘s increasing popularity.
Anyway, he went a bridge too far in this particular instance.
Remove “a portrait of” from the headline and this would have been good news.
