BALTIMORE (WBFF) – Moving one step closer to confirming rumors running through the state of Maryland, former lieutenant governor and Republican National Committee chair Michael Steele formed an exploratory committee ahead of a possible run for governor.
The GOP field for the 2022 governor’s race would get a little more crowded if Steele jumped in, with current Maryland Secretary of Commerce Kelly Schulz already in the ring, Del. Dan Cox campaigning and Robin Ficker in the race as well.
Following Lt. Gov. Boyd Rutherford’s announcement not to run, Schulz emerged as the GOP favorite thus far.
Steele has been a vocal critic of former President Donald Trump, setting up a partisan fight for the primary race if he runs after Cox joined the race, who has been a staunch supporter for the former president.
While the GOP primary race is shaping up, the field on the other side of the ballot is crowded. Nine Democratic candidates are seeking their party’s nomination as well. On July 18, the Maryland Democratic Party hosted a campaign kick-off barbecue event in Bowie where candidates mingled and met with prospective supporters.
The primary is set for June 28, 2022.

Can take donations from lots of folks and charge off everything he does to “The Run”.
CNN and MSNBC would give him air time as long as he trashes Trump and or real Republicans,

When I saw the headline I admit I assumed they were talking about the Democrat primary. I’d forgotten he was a never-Trumper Republican. He’ll fit right in in Maryland.
In what state is he going to run? And as a Dem or a Republican? Twenty years ago Steele had great possibilities in front of him. He threw it all away.
Running as a RINO in a Dim state, let me see, can he make it? Yes. Larry Hogan did it but I don’t think he had any GOP coat tails ( Democrats won a 32-15 majority in the Senate and a 99-42 majority in the House).
