A new poll indicates that 1.8 million Americans have turned down job offers in order to stay on unemployment insurance.
Morning Consult surveyed 463 out-of-work American adults at the end of June. 13% — roughly one in eight — said that they had refused job offers while unemployed because they “receive enough money from unemployment insurance without having to work.” Others said that child care obligations, worries over COVID-19, and a lack of job flexibility limited their willingness to take new positions.
Because 14.1 million adults were collecting benefits at the time of the survey, Morning Consult calculated that roughly 1.8 million Americans turned down jobs due to the handouts.
Under President Biden’s $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan, the federal government funded $300-per-week enhanced unemployment insurance — a policy that has caused sluggish labor market recovery. Twenty-six states — all but one of which are led by Republicans — have therefore opted out of the program.
As personal finance company WalletHub recently found, nine of the ten states with the most robust labor market recoveries — Vermont, Utah, Nebraska, South Dakota, Idaho, New Hampshire, Alabama, Kansas, Montana, and Oklahoma — have Republican governors. Meanwhile, all of the bottom ten — Illinois, New Jersey, Louisiana, the District of Columbia, California, Connecticut, Nevada, New York, New Mexico, and Hawaii — are run by Democrats.

Only 1.8 million?
Democrat Party “success” story.
How does one live on $15,600?
I guess sell drugs for cash too...
Well obviously we have to import 3.6 million to fill the jobs those 1.8 million won't take.
And all 5.4 million will be voting for I wonder who.
I couldn’t on about that in 1996.
Unthinkable now.
When I was doing payroll for various companies, that was totally illegal.
IF you were told to come back to work or were offered other work, you couldn’t continue on UNEMPLOYMENT.
Had a couple of ‘employees’ try shenanigans and got both of their benefits stopped due to fraud.
I don’t know about other states but turning down a job in Missouri is grounds for losing your unemployment benefits.
“How does one live on $15,600?”
This is going well.
Are the available jobs entry level and entry level pay? How old are these workers, where they office workers before?
Well DUH...
Gotcha.
I guess the $300 per week is just the Federal dollars.
Then you get state dollars, and do some side work for cash...
That is 1 in 8 that would admit it... Probably means it is 3 or 4 times that.
That is what happened with my Brother-in-law years ago when, on gov’t assistance, he was offered a job making twice as much. His kids were also drawing “Crazy Checks”. He just could not give up the “free Money” for twice as much earned money.
When he was destitute, I once found him a job doing the same work I was doing (Power plant operations, different company) with great pay and great benefits! His answer was, “I don’t want to do that kind of work!”
I said “OK” and never tried to help him again.
“Work” was not his thing. Kind of like Maynard G. Krebs.
And, this would be the problem with “universal income” as well.
I personally knew people who turned down employment at significantly more than they were making on unemployment. Why? Probably the reasons varied. Some like sitting at home and watching TV over the stress of work. Some were alcoholics or drug users and you simply can’t do that at most work places. Some liked being home with the kids. The point is, as long as they have enough money coming in to meet the bare basics, many can pick up the cash they need elsewhere. Also, there are a lot of programs like mothers of infant children. I’ve had renters monetizing their SNAP cards by buying steaks and reselling them at cents on the dollar. That’s more than enough for beer. (Some of them take to growing their own pot. There’s, after-all, plenty of time to tend the plants when they aren’t working. )

A. spouse is working

c. maybe their house is pif no credit card debt and don’t need much money. I learned a long time ago that working for the almighty dollar got me nothing. When I surrendered and started working for God, things got better and I didn’t need as much stuff to fill me up, or to impress you.
What a surprise!! Nobody saw this coming! HA!
Cut them off.
If they’re able to work, they should get off their lazy asses and work instead of sucking off the government teat.
