The jobs market’s progress appeared to stall last week.
New claims for unemployment benefits soared by 51,000 to 419,000 for the week ended July 17, the Department of Labor said Thursday.
Economists had forecast 350,000 new claims, a decline of 10,000 from the previous week’s initial estimate of 360,000. That estimate was revised up to 368,000.
The four-week moving average, which smoothes out week-to-week volatility and is considered by many to be a more reliable gauge of the health of the labor market, rose by 750 to 385,250.
Continuing claims, which are reported with a week’s delay, fell 29,999 to 3,236,000.
The federal government last year launched new programs that provide benefits to people not eligible for traditional unemployment benefits. The total number of continued claims under all programs for the week ended July 3 was 12,573,833, a decline of 1,262,814 from the previous week.

“Unexpected!”
“Unexpectedly”
Looks like they aren’t very good at predicting the future. They should get out of the business that allows them to make predictions on the economy if they don’t know anything about it.
Back to the old games played to help Obama.
What’s all this I hear about “jobless clams?” I mean they never have jobs! They just sit in the water and sand and filter out organic matter, and then we eat them. What’s the big deal? I mean it would be one things if it were lobsters, at least they DO something....”
“Uh, Emily, that’s “claims”, “jobless claims,” people who lost their jobs and are now seeking jobless benefits.”
“Oh, that’s different..................NEVER MIND!”
Drink!
A Magic 8 Ball is more accurate........................
Quick, print more “stimulus” checks paying people not to work.
Help wanted signs outside at almost every small business in my area as well as at many larger firms. Several businessmen I’ve spoken to say they can’t get people to apply for jobs. One fast food business closed its dining room (only drive through window is open) because it can’t get enough hourly workers at $15.00 per hour.
Meanwhile at local apartment complexes and on the sidewalks in town there are many able bodied people just hanging out during the day in numbers I’ve never seen before the lockdown.
I know one college educated young couple, with an infant, that isn’t trying to find work. They quit their jobs and are quite content to live on stimulus checks and other government benefits. He has a PhD and outstanding college loans.
Meanwhile inflation is skyrocketing on necessities (food, energy, property taxes, housing, transportation). Even clothing prices are starting to rise.
Yet the general population seems content with the current status of the economy. Certainly elected representatives show no evidence of feeling heat from constituents about the economy. The weekly email letter from my GOP congressman is filled with photos visiting fire departments, VFW chapters and boasting about legislation he has co-sponsored which has no chance of being passed. Nothing of any substance.
Same here.....................If someone doesn't have a job, they don't want a job................
Just heard this news on the radio.
The government spokesman didn’t use “unexpected”.
She used “one-time events”.
Stagflation, here we come!
“Unexpected!” = Democrats Fault

Raise the minimum wage again....yeah, that’s the ticket.
Yep. No kidding.
Now on top of extra Unemployment benefits, they’re getting $300 per a child the 15th of every month.
With all this time at home, they’re gonna have even more kids!
Exactly.
“Now on top of extra Unemployment benefits, they’re getting $300 per a child the 15th of every month.”

Why are so few people talking about this....even Conservatives? Pretty much everyone is on the government dole now....is this not socialism?
I know. It’s crazy.
I think, or hope the Republicans are methodically saving their ammo for that insane Stimulus Bill.
