The Arlington County Board is voting Wednesday night on whether to create a civilian group overseeing police — and on just how much power such a body might have to launch independent investigations of misconduct by officers.
The vote, more than a year after racial justice demonstrators nationwide called for greater scrutiny of police, particularly following the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis police custody, comes as other jurisdictions around the D.C. region and the country have taken similar steps to ramp up accountability.
In Arlington, months of debate have centered on whether the civilian board should be able to launch its own probes or mete out discipline.
A proposal put forward by County Manager Mark Schwartz gives the oversight board less power than a panel of local stakeholders recommended, angering some community activists. Under his plan, the board would only review completed police investigations — not conduct its own investigations. A majority of the board voted in May to move forward within Schwartz’s limits.

They started this crap in Rochester NY...where the now famous Mayor Not So Lovely...just got indicted. They wanted the power to fire cops or even put them in jail. The courts told them...blow it out your ear.

The truth is always somewhere in the middle. Many of these police oversight boards are nothing more than sick jokes. They are just itching to find some cop to hang.
But on the other hand, many police departments are also sick jokes: We have investigated ourselves, and we have found that we did nothing wrong.
You should just ask for this article to be deleted and start over.
For one,when I click on the URL it takes me to an aggressive paywall such that I cannot even read one paragraph.
For another, it is Alexandria, not Arlington.
If I was a white cop I’d announce to the world that I’ll have no contact of *any* kind with *any* member of a protected group. If I’m going to go to prison I’d rather it be for something I *didn’t* do,not what I *did* do.
