Oregon Democrat Rep. Earl Blumenauer said 'space travel isn’t a tax-free holiday for the wealthy'
As Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos launched into space on Tuesday aboard a Blue Origin rocket, and back on Earth, a Democratic lawmaker announced a measure to tax commercial spaceflight.
Oregon Democrat Rep. Earl Blumenauer, who is a member of the House Ways and Means Committee, on Tuesday introduced what he is calling the Securing Protections Against Carbon Emissions (SPACE) Tax Act, which would create excise taxes on commercial space flights carrying human passengers for purposes other than scientific research.
"Space travel isn’t a tax free holiday for the wealthy," Blumenauer wrote on Twitter. "We pay taxes on plane tickets. Billionaires flying into space—producing no scientific value—should do the same, and then some."

Naturally, governments need revenue if they are going to provide services. The sad part is where governments hide the taxes that people pay by taxing businesses which then in turn raise the prices that customers pay.
Whether you pay a 10% sales tax or you pay 10% more for the merchandise so that the business can pay the tax is irrelevant. The point is that you will still pay 10% more.
My point is that if enough people realized how much they pay for those “services”, they might realize they can find a more efficient alternative than their government to provide those services.
Governments are horribly inefficient vehicles of service.
These guys are so desperate they can slap a tax on things moving faster than the speed of sound.
What do you think pussy Republicans do? They’ll argue the tax is too high and it should be lower when they should get in this guys face and scare the piss out of him. The time for being nice is over.
Man’s progress has been set back going back 100,000 years. They have various names like vandals and today are known as democrats....
Think of the known progress from thousands of years ago to the early 1800’s that was blocked when we finally started progressing quickly because of the United States with the vandals around the world always trying to regress and not progress man. It is all about power. Evil always stalks the world.
Great way to move the industry offshore.
There’s a lot to consider in all these questions but yes taxation is a sensitive issue for any of us who are invested in large business interests.
I’m everywhere from A to Z including the big names in small amounts.
Fear of socialism can lead to bad things. The UK’s gun laws as Peter Hitchens pointed out are rooted in capitalist fears following World War I that the Communist takeover in Russia would happen there in the UK.
Personal responsibility is tough I want someone else to take care of it is a natural response. This system does not inspire personal responsibility for one’s life.
For the first time in my life, I agree with Democrats on something. I am a near life-long conservative. (I say near, because I didn’t convert from my school brainwashing until I got my first paycheck some half-century ago.) I totally disagree with the Catastrophic Man-made Global Warming hoax. I also believe that excessive taxation destroys the economy.
However, the very people taking advantage of space tourism are almost always the ones that disagree with the points I just made. So, tax the he!! out of them. Space tourism does little to advance space technology over that which is already being advanced for actual space exploration. It also generates HUGE amounts of the very thing these liberal elites call ‘pollution’. So, tax them for it.
Bezos: we are going to start booking vacations in Hell.
Democrats: TAX IT TAX IT !!!
I’m a big user of Amazon, have been for many years (Glad I’m helping your portfolio).
It’s efficient and user-friendly, and out of the hundreds of items I’ve purchased there have only been two real (and very inexpensive) problems. It has been especially helpful during the last 18 months.
As much as many of us may dislike what we know of his ‘politics’, the fact is that people like Bezos create many jobs, many opportunities for small businesses; and contribute greatly to innovation and discovery.
The democrat politicians need to drop the word ‘progressive’ from their self-description; they never show themselves to be in favor of genuine progress in any area.
