MOSCOW. July 16 (Interfax) - The Russian government has approved talks between NPO Energomash and America's Orbital Sciences LLC on a contract for the use of the RD181M engine in the Antares launch vehicle, under a directive published on the official website for legal information.

"To accept a proposal by the Roscosmos State Corporation for Space Activities, which was agreed with concerned federal executive authorities, on conducting negotiation between the joint-stock company NPO Energomash named after Academic V.P. Glushko and Orbital Sciences LLC (United States of America) on the conclusion of a contract for the use of the RD181M liquid-propellant engine in the Antares LV, which is used for cargo delivery to the International Space Station and for launches of scientific research and commercial spacecraft," the directive says.

That’s the way. Give over the production of our weaponry and tech to the enemy so that it can be studied and copied and countered and cut off when it is time to hit America.

The Russian rockets engines aren’t our tech. Also, they’re selling *US* their rocket engines because our companies are having problems making engines as good - their liquid fueled disposable engines are actually better and more reliable than ours, in general, with the exception of SpaceX and maybe Blue Origin’s engines at current.

We need to copy them and manufacture them ourselves with improvements, of course.

Yeah, um, we’ve been trying that and it hasn’t been going so well.

It’s kind of like US made AKs. It took the US fifty years to make an AK commercially that was as good as the Russian ones, and it still didn’t get decent until the Nodak Spud receiver showed the way. All the ones prior sucked and were unreliable. The problem turned out to be (in part) that American manufacturers were all trying to tighten up the tolerances and that resulted in AKs that don’t run.

The RD-181 is the version that the Russians are selling us:

The AR1 is the best effort at an improved copy from US makers so far - looks better on paper but it hasn’t been working out well so far in reality.

Fake news. We spend 5 times as much on our military and we cannot even do that. Don’t be fooled by the neocons, we have NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT regarding Russia and China.

...yep, nothing to worry about, nothing at all.

Yeah, if the US had the foresight to keep the geniuses that developed the F1 engines employed, who knows what they could have come up with by now?

But, cut the funding and divert $$ to social spending, and then howl when everyone finds out the skills and industry are gone.

The Russians are not smarter, they have just been at it continuously, not just when the political winds blow right.

Some would point out that the fact that they’ve been at it continuously would seem to indicate that they’re smarter. :P

Should be noted that a lot of their rocket engines are 60s and 70s designs that they worked out all the bugs on. Their new stuff is based off rethinking those while keeping concepts that worked.

Should also be noted that NASA went around killing anything that was a danger to their pwecious shuttles, so a lot of talent and skill was lost there too.

Um, you do know that they already have hypersonic missiles on the world arms market, just not ones this fast, right?

The Russians partnered up with the Indians to make the BrahMos I missiles. They go Mach 3 and are the fastest cruise missiles in service anywhere, verified by Western observers. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BrahMos

They are both working on a successor missile, the BrahMos2 - top speed is to be Mach 8. This will also likely be confirmed by Western observers when it is deployed later this decade.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BrahMos-II

They already have had Mach 7 test articles fly, again with Western verification.

We spend 5 times as much on our military, but we may be spending most of it on waste and LGBTQ programs and ‘tolerance and diversity’. We recently cancelled and removed the anti-torpedo torpedo launchers from our carriers because they turned out not to work. We don’t have countermeasures for supercavitating torpedoes, and our defense industry can’t even make one for us. Those have been on the world arms market for decades and they are absolutely what they say on the tin per independent evaluations. The list goes on and on.

Just because we spend more money doesn’t mean we’re spending it on the right things.

The “Russian stuff is junk” crowd would not agree.

I would add S-500 the field mobile anti-ballistic system was tested successfully against a ballistic targets. It is a mobile ABM which also kind of unique.

“Um, you do know that they already have hypersonic missiles on the world arms market, just not ones this fast, right?”

Yep, that’s the point of my sarcastic post. I’m just regurgitating crap I’ve heard here in the recent past: “Oh nothing to worry about regarding Russia or China, since we spend more than both of them combined”. Be interesting to see what their salaries and procurement costs are compared to ours...might just flip things around a bit. Not to mention that neither country is known as being a paragon of transparency when it comes to government expenditures.

In fact, considering the way the Weegars are being treated by China, including forced sterilization, I’m starting to suspect that China simply doesn’t see a need for other cultures even existing on the planet, and their long-term goal is to simply eradicate them. And meanwhile we keep telling ourselves that there’s nothing to worry about, since China’s a backward, Third World, country. Most people who have been there in the past 20 years might think.differently, though.

The U.S. has been using the RD180 series engines on our rockets for over 20 years. In 2014 work was begun on a U.S. replacement and now 7 years later none has been produced.

I’m waiting to see independent confirmation of that. Fortunately, the Indians will likely be able to provide that in the near future, IIRC.

That was the beauty of the AKs and SKSs. It’s why troops in Vi39t Nam sometimes traded their M-16s for AK or even SKS. They kept firing even when dragged in the mud. The 16s had to be kept clean in a reallly dirty environment.
