I’m thinking Japan could go nuclear in less than three months if they set their minds to it.
“I’m thinking Japan could go nuclear in less than three months if they set their minds to it.”
More like 3 days. The Hello Kitty version would be on the shelf in a week.

i would think that japan would need to respond in kind within a few hours. mainland china has old grudges...
Japan probably has, at least on paper. They have all the know-how.
If you have all the formula, the rest of the process is just physics.
“I’m thinking Japan could go nuclear in less than three months if they set their minds to it.”
If they haven’t already, one intel wag said, “Japan could go nuclear in a long weekend.” The previous Japanese president wanted the constitution amended to accommodate military use and, possibly nuclear weapons. The problem our allies have with relying on the US nuclear umbrella is periodically, the country goes nuts and the leadership turns against the allies.
If it were me running Japan, I’d have the parts and pieces ready along with whatever delivery vehicle that would be required. It would be a matter of assembling the final product. None of our non-nuclear allies have so far gone public, but if the US gets flaky and a war looks immanent, you can expect several “test” blasts somewhere out to sea. As Dr. Strangelove said, “What good is the ultimate weapon if no one knows you have it?”
I think the defining moment when our allies probably lost faith in America was Obama’s response to the sinking of the the South Korea Chonan. It was a “strongly worded diplomatic note.” Oh, yeah, that makes them quake.
President Nixon’s response to the murder of three US officers by the North was to mobilize the entire Pacific fleet. That costs money and that’s the only thing that works to get them to back down. The North quickly executed a couple of grunts and apologized. No more problems during Nixon’s presidency.
There are enough chinese to attempt an overwhelming shock and awe land campaign.
I’d bet more likely hours. The time it takes to assemble.
They have F-15’s. Americans have tested theirs with nukes.
Japan can also launch Tomahawks that can also be “Specials”.
China will disintegrate if Beijing is turned into glass.
Three months? I say less than three days.
The time it takes to create a nuclear weapon is almost proportional to the time it take to enrich enough fissile material to reach the desired weapon energy yield. Japan has the missile technology, but not the enriched fissile material which would likely take a great deal of time considering they don’t have the enriching facilities in place - at least officially.
There is no doubt in my mind that it would take Japan about 15 minutes to build a few dozen tactical nukes. Japan is one of the most advanced nations on Earth.
If there is a war between Japan and China, my money is on Japan. No way China conquerors the Japanese mainland.
Taiwan is no slough either. China better remember that the entire Pacific rim will support Taiwan and oppose China, including Australia and the USA.

30 minutes. :)
Japan could go nuke in a month—they are not Iran or North Korea. Talk like this only ensures war—China has, in their arrogance, misjudged Japan. The Mongols tried this before when they tried to invade long ago—they failed. This attempt to divide Japan will only unify them into a powerful force.
