The withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan signals the end of a war that involved close to 800,000 American service members. Defending against new threats will require the U.S. to replenish its all-volunteer force with fresh recruits — a task made harder by the dwindling number of Americans willing and able to serve.
The U.S. currently has 1.3 million active-duty service members. Due to attrition and retirement, the military needs to find more than 150,000 new recruits every year to meet its overall “end strength” goal. In 2020, the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines all hit their annual recruitment goals — but those figures were distorted by a historically weak job market, as active-duty service members delayed plans to reenter the civilian sector, reducing the need for new hires. Last year’s target of 61,200 new Army enlistees, for instance, was 20% lower than in 2018, when the Army failed to meet its goal.
Recruiting isn’t easy. At least 70% of Americans between 17 and 24 are ineligible for military service due to obesity, mental health issues, past drug use, criminal records or lack of a high school degree. Overall, only 13% of young adults express a positive propensity to serve, with women about half as likely as men to consider enlisting. The Defense Department estimates that just 2% out of 20.6 million 17- to 21-year-olds have the desired combination of strong academic credentials, adequate physical fitness and an interest in serving.

THe left hand doesn’t seem to know what the right hand has been doing. I’ll bet there are several multi-generation military families that are now discourging there young folks from chosing the military after high school. Based on how painfully PC they have become.
Same thing with local police forces.
And border patrol. These are rapidly becoming thankless jobs. All this can be reversed, but first, top brass needs to admit that there is a problem.

Counter proposal to the draft. If you receive government loans for your degree, you are subject to being drafted to meet the shortages.
I know I would advise my kids against it in the current environment. For that matter I don’t even recommend the company I work for.

I’ve been military or reserve my entire adult life, albeit for another country. I work closely with American servicemen every day as a trainer.
I’ve have never seen morale so low.
The leaders HATE the kind of people who serve well.
We are not allowed to win our wars, so why bother?
Time to cut spending and cut taxes.
I'm a twice vet (AF & Army Nat'l Guard), and no way would either of my two boys be going into the military right now...draft or no draft. I'd be sending them overseas to stay with family, or set them up somewhere in Asia. This new, woke military is going to result in a lot of bodies piled up at some point since they are more concerned with being politically correct than readiness. There needs to be a major purge within the military.
Leaves the Romney boys out along with the Trumps and Goldwater males. Let’s see some of the GOP establishment sons in infantry regiments.
To be honest the Democrats running the show aren’t worth the effort. I’m Vietnam era vet, disabled, and about half my family were in the military in several wars, from WW II to Afghanistan.
I advised my Grandson to get as far away from the Democrat run military as possible.

at least their cities will be the ones Nuked.

We have an emasculated, pubescent, quasi-male demographic that is unfit for the military, unfit to work,
and totally dependent on the teat of government.
Recruit from the ranks of women and LGBQT neurotics. They will be so willing to defend an America that they hate.
We could do with less people in the military,
I thought of taking in my 18 year old to enlist. Then this woke business came out in the open. Nope. Take somebody else’s kid.
People in the military do not want the draft. They would rather serve with people who want to be there.
