ick Saraev is 25 years old, far too young, it would seem, to be thinking about death. And yet, since he turned 21, he has taken steps to prevent the infirmities of old age. Every day, he takes 2,000 mg of fish oil and 4,000 IU of vitamin D to help prevent heart disease and other ailments.
He steams or pressure-cooks most of his meals because, he says, charring meats creates chemicals that may increase the risk of cancer. And in the winter, he keeps the humidity of his home at 35 percent, because dry air chaps his skin and makes him cough, both of which he considers manifestations of chronic inflammation, which may be bad for longevity.
Based on the life expectancies of young men in North America, Saraev, a freelance software engineer based near Vancouver, believes he has about 55 years before he really has to think about aging. Given the exponential advances in microprocessors and smartphones in his lifetime, he insists the biotech industry will figure out a solution by then. For this reason, Saraev, like any number of young, optimistic, tech-associated men, believes that if he takes the correct preventative steps now, he might well live forever.
Saraev’s plan is to keep his body in good enough shape to hit “Longevity Escape Velocity,” a term coined by English gerontologist Aubrey de Grey to denote slowing down your aging enough to reach each new medical advance as it arrives. If you delay your death by 10 years, for example, that’s 10 more years scientists have to come up with a drug, computer program, or robot assist that can make you live even longer.

Timothy Leary thought we was going to live long enough to hit those advances. Didn’t work out. There’s certain chunks of aging we just can’t seem to get around. Then there’s cancer, live long enough, you get cancer.
Robert Anton Wilson was very big on this concept. He was very confident in the march of science in this area. Wrote about it quite a lot in the 1970s and 80s. He died in 2007.
Remember when Popular Mechanics and Popular Science was actually about mechanics and science?
I can almost here the ambulance chaser ad on television:
Have you or a loved one taken massive doses of fish oils and vitamin D and suffered from cancer. If so, call 1-800-CRA-PLAW.
If you live long enough, you’re bound to die of something.
we’re all born to die...
worrying about how and when it happens won’t stop the process...
And reality
All I can say to this issue is we have all been sentenced to life without parole. Some of our sentences are just longer than others. Frankly I will rejoice when I have served my time.
Nope. Only Jesus has the keys over life and death.
Science can’t even answer the question of masks.
So busy planning how not to die... you forget to live? Try as one might Hebrews 9:27 will prevail.
I can’t even make plans for the weekend. What the hell would I do for eternity?
My grandmother died at 98, and my mother is currently 95; both were "meat & potatoes" people. See what I mean?
Sounds like the old chestnut about not drinking, smoking, gambling, or chasing women. It won’t make you live forever, it’ll just seem like it.

hear with your ears?
RAW hoped to live to see what he thought would be the Omega Point (Dec 21, 2012). Maybe it’s better that he wasn’t disappointed.
Fnord.
Going through life without ever eating a grilled rib eye probably won’t cause you to live forever, it will just make your allotted time seem like forever.
I agree.
I would not want to make the likely choices one would have to make in order to receive the technology necessary to live to be 110, 120, or 130. You would have to be part of the establishment and I would want no part of their entrance requirements. Think, George Soros, Bill Gates, or Hillary Clinton.
The human body was designed to put up with extremes of temperature and less than ideal food and water. It was made for hard, physical work. Babying himself like he’s doing isn’t going to work. But he isn’t going to listen to reason.
Another hard fact. It was designed to NOT last forever. Hate to disappoint the guy but that’s the way it is.
