California electric grid operator confirms electric vehicles should not be charged during shortages
American Experiment ^ | 07/14/2021 | Isaac Orr

The abject failure of Califonia’s energy policies is becoming more apparent every day. The Golden State has taken the lead in shutting down reliable coal, natural gas and nuclear power plants and jumping feet first into a grid powered largely by unreliable wind and solar.

California is also seeking to ban the sale of new gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles in the state by 2035, even though this would require Californians to be even more reliant upon an unreliable power grid.

An overreliance on wind and solar has resulted in a grid that is so unreliable that the California grid operator, the California Independent Systems Operator (CAISO), has resorted to asking Californians to reduce their electricity consumption, which Center of the American Experiment has confirmed means not charging electric vehicles.

California ISO @California_ISO California, it’s almost time! #FlexAlert today, July 12, from 4-9 p.m. Now is the time to:

• Set thermostats to 78 degrees, if health permits • Unplug unused electronic devices • Turn off unnecessary lights

CA makes illegal the sale of gas-powered cars in 2035. They do not have an infrastructure that can remotely support the needed charging stations.

They will be panicking in 2034, and rushing to build charging stations (and that’ll have to be financed by the state because there won’t be any revenue coming in for a year or so).

Also, Californians, get ready to pay exorbitant fees for charging. And you’ll have little choice of where to go.

Interstate trucks will avoid CA because there will be few gas/diesel stations, and they will charge a lot.

It’s going to be a disaster as can be expected every time you let the government manage something.

And they are too expensive for most people.

The other thing that may be a problem is older neighborhoods don’t have electrical infrastructure to carry large loads. When someone builds a large home there they have to pay the power company extra money to upgrade the electrical system.

If you buy an electric car you SHOULD BE REQUIRED to recharge it using ONLY by using wind, solar or hydro electric means. You want to buy one of those cars, get a tax break because with that purchase, all while telling the world that you’re doing your part to save the planet, then go the Full Monty.

No recharging using coal, natural gas or nuclear.

Yep! Some of us have known this all along. The whole point is to get rid of cars....

“Turn off unnecessary lights”

I don’t mean to hijack, but about 2 years ago, I finally gave LED lights a try at home. I use almost exclusively the “lower” temperature ones, reserving the retina-melting “blue” lights for the garage.

Since then, I have shifted almost completely to LED. In several lamps I use a Y-splitter to improve light levels to match previous levels. At about 10% the power, my electric bill clearly shows the difference.

But I note that I still have the habit of running around turning off lights, even though it doesn’t really save me anything at all, any more.

CA wants to BAN gas/diesel cars and trucks. A standard range Tesla requires about 50kwh to charge. That would more than double most home’s power consumption. That’s just ONE car. Make it 2 cars and the problem gets worse. CA also wants you to get rid of gas appliances, so electric oven, electric water heater, electric clothes dryer, etc. And we can’t build new power plants here. And we are trying to close down our Nuclear Power Plants. Lastly, the enviroweenies want to tear down our dams, getting rid of hydroelectric power (and water storage). Maybe we can run a big extension cord to China. Hell, everything else is made there.

“They will be panicking in 2034, and rushing to build charging stations”

California can put a charging station in every house and in every parking space in the state. The key is generating capacity. If the state doesn’t have the electrical generating capacity, it matters not. Replacing fossil fuel generation with solar and wind isn’t going to add much capacity at night when people are home, having dinner, washing clothes and dishes, using a myriad of electronic devices, and trying to recharge the electric cars. In 2019 25% of California’s electric supply was imported from neighboring states.

California does not live in a bubble with respect to water, electric power, or fossil fuel. If other states consume their slack generating capacity with population growth and increase in electric vehicles, those states will have less surplus electricity to sell to California. Does California have any plan to replace its imports with electricity generated inside the state? Will the greens even allow enough capacity to be constructed knowing that wind turbines kill birds and solar panels spoil the land on which they are located? Will other states be willing to build generating capacity specifically for Calfornia?

California buys hydro electricity from Washington state. The more they buy the more our Washington state electrical bills go up. We have more hydro than any state in the nation but I don’t think we should be continually selling to a state which refuses to look after itself.

Wait till the number of these electric car appliances triple in numbers. It will choke off the grid in CA.

I wonder what percentage of households in America own ONLY electric cars. An ICE car could be rented for convenience on long trips.

RE: Wind power. There was an article about wind power and that to provide just LA with electricity you’d need a wind farm the size of Arizona.

The grid doesn't work that way. I tell this to people who sign up for "green" electric power service. They just stare.
