I was visiting with a friend in the office supply business today.

Their raw materials that they buy from vendors have exploded in price, and they are made out of many different materials and come from many different locations...

I bought a 2015 fully loaded crew cab Ram 4X4 about 4 years ago with 20K miles on it for 30K. It now has 90K miles on it and I can get 34K for it.

When has that ever happened?

Wonderful...

I’m flying out to Virginia and Maryland (in early September) for a week to see some Civil War battlefields and now rental cars have gotten more expensive.

Increasing prices for used cars and car rentals/leasing are indicators that people are putting of buying cars until the new generation, non ICE cars are available and cheaper. The other big indicator is terrible new ICE car sales. How are new car sales going? No one wants to be in the first couple of years of ownership of an ICE car when the alternative becomes a no brainer.

I am in need of a new (used) car. At the beginning of covid I thought, with shutdowns and mass unemployment, that I would be able to get a good deal so I waited a little bit (plus, at first, I didn’t want to go around town much). Anyway, I was way wrong. Stimulus money came flowing, and used cars sold quickly. Now, even new cars are hard to get due to the chip shortage. When I search online and find something of interest, more often than not I discover it has already been spoken for.

So, I have to decide whether to plunk down maybe $7500+ to replace the engine in my current car (and the car will be worth about that much after repairs) or to find a car for around the same price.

Every year I rent an auto for a fall car trip. It usually costs me arund $400. Just checked on what it will cost me in September: $840! Half of that is taxes and various fees.
