FB oversight member says free speech ‘is not an absolute human right’

A Facebook Oversight Board member says free speech is “not an absolute human right,” and must be balanced against “other human rights” when deciding what content to censor.

The board member, former Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning Schmidt, said “free speech is not an absolute human right.”

“It has to be balanced with other human rights,” she said Thursday at a Politico Europe event.

The 20-member Facebook Oversight Board was set up last year to allow corporate executives to claim distance from politically sensitive decisions.

The board in May recommended that the company uphold a continued ban on former President Donald Trump’s account after the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

The oversight board includes five Americans and 15 members from Europe, Africa, Latin America and Asia.

Well he’s right as far as our Constitution goes. The First Amendment protects us with enumerated freedoms (religion, press, speech, assembly, petition) from Congress (government). It does not protect us in the workplace, for example.

Too many idiots scream “freedom of speech!!” without understanding any of this.

Not really.

The Constitution is brief and doesn’t cover all cases.

Plus it apparently has all sorts of Umbras and Penumbras.
[Just ask Traitor Roberts...]

There’s alotta Law out there.

“Free Speech IS a Constitutional Right, under the First Amendment!!!!”

True but yelling FIRE in a theater when there’s no fire is a crime, isn’t it? I’m not trying to make a larger point except there is a little gray area here.

I had said:

“So we have members of the E. U. overseeing our FBI?

Put an end to that “S” right now.”

I’m sorry for that. It said FB and I read FBI.

You are right in that the First Amendment only protects people against government suppression of free speech. A private employer can still fire you for saying something they don’t like. And a social media outlet can still ban you for saying something they don’t like.

But there is a larger issue here, as I’m sure you will agree. Western civilization is built on the concept of free speech, and freedom of thought.

Facebook and so many others are trying to suppress freedom of speech and freedom of thought. That’s not unconstitutional because they are not government entities. But it certainly is immoral behavior.

And it’s fascist behavior as well.

Agreed. I think we’re like minds on this. My only point is that freedom of speech is not absolute and does have restrictions, even in our own country.

Thought this article did a good job of laying out the different guardrails that have been set over the years: https://saylordotorg.github.io/text_american-government-and-politics-in-the-information-age/s08-02-religion-speech-the-press-asse.html

Seems to me the Left needs someone to hate, someone to show their base who are the bad people, Republicans and White folks are the New Enemies of the State. The Nazi’s used the Jews to accomplish the same goal, the similarities are frightening.
