The most common cholesterol-lowering drugs may improve hospitalized COVID-19 patients’ chances of survival and reduce their risks of progressing to more severe disease, a new study suggests.
An analysis of more than 10,000 people admitted to more than a 140 hospitals across the nation found that a class of medications called statins, together with blood pressure drugs, reduced in-hospital COVID-19 death by 40% among those who took them prior to being admitted. The same held true of COVID-19 patients’ odds of severe disease: those only taking statins benefited from a 25% lower risk of developing severe disease and those taking blood pressure medications had a 11% lower risk.
The findings applied primarily to those with high cholesterol and high blood pressure, mostly because people with such health conditions are more likely to take these medications to help treat them.
The reduced risk of death was slightly higher for those taking statins alone (46%) compared to people only taking high blood pressure medication (27%).

Interesting that you should say that. My hubby ruptured both Achilles tendons within a week I’d each other but the docs said being on statins had nothing to do with it
My doctor’s office has placards all over the walls pushing statins. I have strange cholesterol readings, low in HDL but also low in LDL. I will not take statins. Daily treadmill & weights in gym is a much better option to avoid heart disease.
I had a doctor try to prescribe them because my total cholesterol hit 199. Normal blood pressure. Pulse of 55-60. And I was about 100 lbs lighter than the fatso trying to prescribe them.
BTW - total cholesterol isn’t even CORRELATED to heart attack or strokes for men over 60. AND the sweet spot for total cholesterol versus all causes of death? About 230.
40 mg of Atorastatin (my genetics suck), and lots of vitamin D3 and sun. Same as I have since I was a kid.
Loss of smell. No other symptoms. Case was last winter for me and as of May I still have antibodies.
From personal observation and experience at age 81, daily moderate exercise is THE BEST option for seniors. My resting pulse is under 60, blood pressure varies with how many salty foods consumed, but usually under 130/80, and I can mow my entire suburban lawn with a push mower with just one 30 minute break in hot and humid Florida. I discovered a moderate regiment of daily exercise after quitting golf, and now feel like I could make it to age 100 without prescriptions, and no chronic pains or aches. I can get leg cramps during night from the treadmill. Then I take a day or two off from treadmill and cramps disappear.
I am on the same drug (in my 40’s), and that was on the list of known interactions.
However, my family history is we tolerate statins very well, so I have had no issues.
I do take CoQu10 as a supplement. That is supposed to help some.
In my job, I mainly use my brain. So one of the side of effects of statins (well, any Cholesterol drug) is decreased brain function. I am VERY concerned about that, so I monitor myself closely.
They are powerful drugs, and not to be used lightly.
As I said, I have a long family history of high cholesterol, so this was something we are all pushed to do.
I doubt that this study means anything, it is worse than antidotal because it has a cover of legitimacy for people who believe things that are published.
Reading the wiki about corona virus they were discovered in the 60's. I'm pretty sure that is like saying Columbus discovered America - the science caught up with nature in that we were able to "see" this new part of nature.
Unless corona virus fell from outer space recently - they have co-evolved with humans (and other animals) and while their virulence may go in waves, the odds of a natural version causing a human extension event are very small (even a species jumper).
Bringing us to the hysteria of global governments about this particular version of corona virus. I'm going to go with it was known to be a human-altered version of a natural virus in January 2020. I'm going to conjecture that the very strong reaction from the Chinese government regarding quarantine was real. The reaction of other governments was in alignment with believing that this was a biological that was released and infecting the public.
I think that the ability of the disease to cause death in healthy individuals, as well as have long term health implications are over stated now in July of 2021. I think that whatever humans did to the original corona virus are going to fail (have failed) and the virus will become another common cold virus in circulation with many mutations and different types no worse than any other cold - which can be fatal.
What I'm trying to say, is that what is going on in the media is blatant manipulation of the public in an effort to control. Control to what end - I'm guessing to keep the established elite power structure.
Trump was very scary for lots of people who are in power and they don't want that ever again. Whatever levers, switches, and knobs they have available to manipulate they will. I'm thinking ~80% of the NSA, FBI, CIA (read Federal government culture) really did not like the Trump years.
We are part of a psychological war that our government is waging on us. As long as I have electricity, hot and cold running water, a full belly, I am not inclined to do anything about it.
Be careful:
Since most people on statins are elderly, we should conclude that less elderly died becuase they were on statins?
A buddy stopped his statins after having problems with his legs.
Well then I suppose if you are on these meds then you might have to start looking for an alternative.
I’m sure Fauci will come out and question their “efficacy” and the media will demand that they not be used.
There shall be no treatment other than the vaccines, everything else will continue to be labeled as snake oil.
(Only being slightly sarcastic.)
That was my sadness when I went on statins. I love grapefruit juice. Then my legs started hurting all the time. No more statins. I eat ginger now. Good for cholesterol and a few other things. And no grapefruit problem.
One takes these meds on a daily basis, 365. "Given early" does not apply.
Ping
The medical profession is trolling with these studies.
Where are the statins truthers when you need them?
Try taking Kyolic or Garlique as an alternative to reduce cholesterol. Or Benecol margarine.
How soon did your sense of smell come back?
A few months till it came back all the way.
I didn’t smell cooked onions till March. Which was odd.
Most of it was back in a few weeks.
