Mental health professionals will be sent out to respond to some 911 calls in Chicago instead of cops, following defund the police protests and a number of police killings of mentally-unwell people.
The city is launching a two-part 'alternative response' pilot program this fall that takes a more public health approach to responding to 911 calls for mental health emergencies.
The initiatives aim to both ensure people suffering a mental health crisis get the help they need rather than face criminalization and free police up for tackling crime, amid a mass exodus of cops from the force.

I don’t know if sending a “Mental Health Professional” INSTEAD OF the police is a good idea, but I do believe that maybe one of a pair of responding officers should have a beanbag shotgun to try first instead of hosing down an obviously crazy person with 9mm.

After a month or two they'll be calling for cops to accompany them... at which point the whole department should quit, move to Florida and get jobs protecting people who are sane.

Well, this type of response always works on TV. Note that the investigators of the behavior unit on Criminal Minds always lower or drop their guns to reason with the wild eyed psychopath who is holding a weapon to the victim’s throat. Clear reasoning with a bit of psycho babble thrown in doesn’t fail to affect the serial killer, who then drops his weapon and collapses in tears of regret.

Ironically, I’ll wager that there are more than enough proggy lib mental health social workers who won’t hesitate to take on this new challenge! They’ll arrive on scene, identify themselves and, eventually, one perp will become angry and indignant, lashing out “Oh, so now y’all think I’m crazy or some sh!t??! Well F*** YOU!!” - - BLAM! BLAM! BLAM! BLAM! BLAM!
How much are they paying these ‘Health Professionals’?
Do they make more than the average policeman?
Do they get a police escort?
This will be a great job - Chicago Government wages [$100,000+] Illinois State Benefits - big pensions - plus no one who works for the State or City ever gets fired.
So the Social Workers will hide, refuse to respond due to safety reasons and still be able to keep their salary and benefits.
There was a time when I would travel to Chicongo every other year to attend a trade show. They haven’t had it there for over 10 years, but it was supposed to return last year until it was canceled because of the scamdemic. It was canceled this year for the same reason. If it is scheduled for there next year I won’t be going. I never intend to set foot in that cesspool again.
I see a shortage of 911 dispatchers in Chicago in the future.
Send them to the Mayor’s office instead

Agreed. In the best of all possible worlds they will send in the "Social Workers" as backup.
