President Biden will direct federal agencies on Friday to rein in the high cost of hearing aids and crack down on hidden fees from airlines and internet providers as part of a package of what administration officials say are pro-consumer moves. The White House said just four companies control 84% of the hearing-aid market and a pair, on average, costs $5,000.
Mr. Biden wants to make hearing aids available over the counter, saying it will spur competition and decrease prices.

I thought they already were OTC.
I was always surprised how much my Grandma’s hearing aids cost. Hopefully this really jacks up the competition in the market.
Maybe so but I don’t keep $1,000 in my wallet:-)
I can’t hear him over the sound of how awesome President Trump is.
“I thought they already were OTC.”
So did I.
They are. They’re constantly advertised.
But there needs to be a background check and waiting period.
The hearing aid companies must not have come through on their annual check to each Senator.
Once those are delivered, I’m sure this policy change will disappear.
I mean, I can't imagine conservatives being against this.
You can get them at Walmart.
arent most programmed to the individuals need?
i dont need just an amplifier
Biden is once again trying to take credit for something that was started by Trump and the GOP Congress in 2017. They set the wheels in motion to bring OTC to market.
But it is sort of like buying your reading lasses at the drug store.
They are not fit to you and they can only do so much.
Works if you have minor problems but if you have serious hearing issues you want a professional.
We get them over the counter. They even have payment plans.
They are available over the counter. You just need to get a hearing test over the counter.
Costco.
Right next to the pharmacy.
Those are the cheap kind. Quality hearing aids have long been ‘fitted’ by ENTs. Several years ago, Congress and Trump opened the door to lower cost, OTC hearing aids for people without advanced hearing loss. Those started coming to market in the last one to two years.
They’re still pricey - way more than the hearing aids you see advertised on late-night infomercials. But, they’re less expensive than what the prescription fitted devices were.
That’s two things he’s said in the last 24 hours that make sense.
