Louisiana Governor Bel Edwards Vetoes Constitutional Carry, SB118
AmmoLand ^ | 28 June, 2021 | Dean Weingarten

Media sources in Louisiana are reporting Governor Bel Edwards has vetoed SB118, the Constitutional Carry bill, as he previously stated he would. From the advertiser.com:

Democratic Gov. John Bel Edwards has vetoed a bill to allow people to carry concealed handguns in Louisiana without a permit or training, which could fuel a growing movement for a veto-override session from the Republican-controlled Legislature.

The bill would restore the right to carry loaded handguns, openly or concealed to Louisiana. Louisiana was one of the first states to deny people the right to carry concealed weapons, in the early 1800s.

Slavery was common in Louisiana before it became a state, or part of U.S. territory with the Louisiana Purchase in 1803.  Slavery continued there until the end of the Civil War. The prohibition on concealed carry was passed on 25 March, 1813, in the second session of the first state legislature.  Kentucky passed a similar law earlier in 1813. The Kentucky law was later ruled to be unconstitutional in Bliss v. Commonwealth, in 1822.

There were no laws against concealed or open carry in the states or federal government before that time. It was not until the Supreme Court ruled the Bill of Rights did not apply to State governments, that bans on concealed carry became common, in the 1830s.

Now that Governor Edwards has vetoed Constitutional Carry, the question becomes whether there will be a veto session from July 20 to as late as July 24.

A veto session is scheduled; however, either house can cancel it by having a majority of legislators declare, in writing, they do not wish a veto session.

It will be the first veto session under the Constitutional provision created in 1974.

You can never ever trust a Democrat. All this talk about Edwards being a moderate because of his abortion position is bunk. Just like Manchin and Sinema are still rotten communists at their core and shouldn’t be trusted.

Say what? That makes no sense.

“Slavery was common in Louisiana before it became a state, or part of U.S. territory with the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. Slavery continued there until the end of the Civil War.”

What does that have to do with this veto?

The article doesn’t say.

“He is a United States Army veteran, having served with the 82nd Airborne Division, reaching the rank of captain.”

As we always bow in respect to the military, but it’s worth remembering that a HUGE number of officers are statist control freaks who want the childlike life of living on a military base for all Americans.

What does that have to do with this veto?

Part of the history of how Louisiana was the first state to ban concealed carry of weapons.

These facts are central to the purpose of the story. The purpose is to slyly associate CCW with slavery and slave owners.

Does Bel Edwards think he might have a chance at the presidency? Perhaps so. In a general election he would be a much better candidate for the Dems than Kamala.

Expect him to spend the next years burnishing his liberal credentials to get through the primary.

The purpose is to slyly associate CCW with slavery and slave owners.

There is no slyness. Concealed carry was banned, in large part, because of slavery and racism.

There is no question about the racist history of gun control in the United States.

One of the reasons to ban concealed carry, is so you can see who is carrying a gun.

If you see someone disapproved of, carrying a gun, you can disarm them easily.

If you find they are armed and concealed carrying, you can charge them with that.

Liberals surely don’t want black people to have Seco d amendment rights, they never did want them to. Liberals are hoping slavery comes back. They sure were lissed when Republicans freed the slaves

"Over ride it."

The votes are there to override. I suspect that it will happen.

They [the Democrats] got them [Blacks] back. Instead of being slaves and being owned by individuals, they [Blacks] willing sold their soul to the Government and its Programs. Each Program they allowed to control their life robbed them of their dignity, self respect, independence, and ambition. The results are obvious.

The Senate has the Republican votes to do it.

The House needs a couple of Independents (there are two) or two Democrats, or a combination to meet the required 2/3 vote of 70 votes.

One Republican voted against it.

Six Democrats voted for it.

To what you’d link, I would add that gun control bills were not just targeted against blacks but also Asians from WW2 on, with a great increase in attempts in the wake of the Vietnam War through the 1980s and 1990s. I believe there is also evidence of it being targeted against Hispanics in a similar time frame but as I’m not Hispanic I’m not nearly as familiar with it.

Gun control in the US *is* historically a tool of racists. That still hasn’t changed - look at who’s supporting gun control today despite their disingenuous claims to want to abolish racism (while actually creating new racist issues.) Anyone who isn’t actually racist should want the racist abomination of gun control removed from the books.

I’m a clean cut person. I’ve been pulled over and searched more than a few times and I’m not black. Nor did I have any warrants.

Hint: Racial/vehicle/affiliation profiling is absolutely a thing in many areas.
