Police around the region say we are in the midst of an epidemic of gun violence the likes of which we have not seen in decades. And it isn't just in the big cities like San Francisco or Oakland, but the smaller ones, too.
Our ABC7 News Insider Phil Matier has been talking to local law enforcement agencies to see what they are finding and what police say they need to stop it.
One veteran is Hayward Police Chief Toney Chaplin, who knows what it's like to work in a big city. On the streets of his suburban town, guns are becoming the solution to arguments big and small, often with deadly consequences.
In the old days, just 15 to 20 years ago, those guns were small. Now they are as powerful as those carried by soldiers going into war. Only this war is on our city streets.

In 1990, San Francisco was seeing a surge in violence. What kind of guns were they seeing then?
"We were seeing a lot of shotguns and a lot of handguns just like this a revolver," Chaplin said. "And coincidentally, this was the first weapon I was issued in the police academy."
It's quite a leap from the old six shooter to the assault rifles of today.
"Absolutely, you'd be reloading with this thing several times before whoever was holding this weapon had to reload once," Chaplin said holding up an assault rifle.

You don’t need to remove the guns, you need to remove the ones who use them against innocent bystanders or crime victims. Put them on the rock pile or gallows. Enforce the current laws and carry out the sentences.
Are these events not making the news?
Don’t know. But an awfully large percentage of don’t have a clue, or even know where to buy one.

Gun free zone-Check.
Ban on large magazines-Check.
No private individual sales-Check.
No buying out of state and bringing them into California.

Except he wasn’t holding an assault rifle. Those are capable of fully automatic fire by definition.
The second point is that all long guns combined account for about 4% of murders with guns. Four percent. Everything from bolt action hunting rifles to shotguns to semi automatic rifles.
How many remember 1968 southern California. The murder of Bobby Kennedy sent the anti- gun band wagon rolling. The promise was they “ONLY wanted to control Handguns! Rifles will not be affected!”
As for ghost guns, at that time (1968) there was a raid on a manufacturing concern in So Cal that was turning out full auto unmarked sub machine guns for the South American trade. Some said the roots led to LBJ and the White House.
The story was quickly suppressed.
A Ghost Gun is a COUNTERFEIT gun, with a fake serial number, that has NO records on ballistic fingerprint on record. This means any gun caught by an officer, literally has NO RECORD. In fact, if they chase down the SN they may knock on your door, seize your weapon and find that your gun is real, and they have a counterfeit gun
