The Picts - My People

The Picts were a people of northern Scotland who are defined as a "confederation of tribal units whose political motivations derived from a need to ally against common enemies" (McHardy, 176). They were not a single tribe, nor necessarily a single people, although it is thought that they came originally from Scandinavia as a cohesive group. Since they left no written record of their history, what is known of them comes from later Roman and Scottish writers and from images the Picts themselves carved on stones. They are first mentioned as "Picts" by the Roman writer Eumenius in 297 CE, who referred to the tribes of Northern Britain as "Picti" ("the painted ones"), ostensibly because of their habit of painting their bodies with dye. This origin of their name has been contested by modern scholarship, however, and it is probable they referred to themselves as some form of "Pecht", the word for "the ancestors". They were referenced earlier by Tacitus who referred to them as "Caledonians" which was the name of only one tribe.

My DNA shows me to be about 95% Scottish and 5% Scandinavian. My Ancestors lived on the edge of the known world and didn't put up with shite from the Romans, the tribes from lower parts of the British Aisles, the Vikings (who I am also part derived from). Not until Edward I in the 14th Century, were they briefly subdued. But they were resettled a few centuries later in Scotland because they were Protestant (Ulster-Scotts/Scotch Irish) and nearly genocided by the Irish (thanks Oliver Cromwell for coming to our aid, and I don't really blame the Irish, their land was stolen) and fled to the American Colonies to create the greatest civilization in the history of humanity. This is my celebration of Bad Ass White People Month in July. Just getting an early start. I'm proud of the privilege I have because my ancestors were tough strong people in a tough harsh part of the world. I'm suffering from African and Gay and LGBQT and Freak fatigue. I make no apologies for my heritage and will never bend the knee. I don't kiss boots and i don't mind doing what is necessary to maintain my independence. Happy Bad Ass White People Eve!

Scots/Picts have the most Diverse DNA in Europe because Scotland was where everyone afoul of the Romans went

The article suggests that the Picts were originally of Scandinavian origin, which I assume to suggest a Germanic origin. But the fact that they eventually blended so completely with the Celtic Scots has always suggested to me that they were also Celts, though a different branch of the family.

You are correct, but we have traced our ancestors to Scotland. And if you know history it will tell you the rest. The Celts were a cultural group as well. The Picts are considered Celts.

Yeah they eventually had to build the Hadrian Wall and the Antonine Wall to manage the traffic and keep my ancestors from raiding. If any of you have not seen the movie The Eagle (from the Roman perspective and fictional history) I highly suggest you do so. Good movie.
