In Maine, the Governor signed suppressor, (gun muffler, silencer) reform into law. The change in law took effect on 8 June, 2021. It is now part of Chapter 112, Public Law.
When the Maine legislature reformed Maine’s ban on hunting with suppressors, the law required a hunter to obtain a special permit to hunt with suppressors. It was an added bureaucratic burden which did not good. It increased useless paperwork and wasted everyone involved’s time.
Here is how the old law read. From mainlegislature.org:
2. Permit. In accordance with this subsection, the commissioner may issue a permit to a person allowing that person to use a noise suppression device with a firearm when hunting any wild animals or wild birds the person is licensed to hunt under this chapter and for which use of the firearm is allowed or for the purpose of killing a wild animal or wild turkey under section 12401 or 12402.A. A person applying for a permit:
(1) Shall show proof of lawful possession of the noise suppression device; and(2) May not have had a hunting license revoked as a result of a serious hunting violation. [PL 2015, c. 262, §1 (NEW).]B. A permit is valid unless revoked under this section. [PL 2017, c. 366, §1 (AMD).]

Wasn’t “not permitted”, in fact all you needed was a permit to do so.
But there is really not much downside to hunting with a suppressor, and everyone that applied for one got one, so the law was pretty useless.
It needs cleaned up at a Federal level. Mufflers are required on vehicles, lawn mowers, weedeaters, . . They should be standard on firearms. It would save hearing.
Yes. The federal effective tax ban and insane regulation has to be one of the worst public health mistakes, ever.
I’ve been deer hunting with my bow lately. 30-06 breaks the natural silence in a teeth chattering/ear ringing way.
But a 30:06 with subsonic rounds and a suppressor would be nice.
I don’t have any experience with suppressors. I heard they don’t really reduce noise that much. Especially with a 30-06. But you’re right, that would be awesome.
There’s some noise but it’s not the high screeching teeth chattering crack an unsuppressed rifle makes. It’s much more bearable.
Well suppressors aren’t silencers but they bring the noise level down to about a .22
Would love to try it.
Me too I just don’t want to live with the restrictions of a class three stamp.
Was there a “fee” to get the permit? What galls me is government charging a “fee” for services that are a right.
What restrictions so you think there are?
They may not be as bad as you think.
I don’t want to be subject to a no notice inspection.
could you please show us in the law where the ATF has the power to do so.
I believe that is a old wife’s tale.
The only requirement is to show the tax stamp (not the suppressor) when it is requested, and to submit change of address information, as far as I can tell.
I have just received the tax stamps under Form 1,to make four suppressors.
Silencers (suppressors) are the least regulated of the NFA items.
Good news.
You really should move here to Tennessee. Hunters aren’t hassled, just passed an open carry law, we’re not ruled by a simulacrum of Atlanta and gosh golly our votes were counted right (for Trump 65-35).
And here I was saving her tampons to stuff into a monster energy drink can to make a suppressor. Dang it all.
