The real answer: Bill Clinton sold them the technology to launch satellites. They were glued to terra firma before he gave them that.
Space is a problem for us. Our economy is very dependent on communications satellites and GPS, but those satellites are vulnerable and impossible to defend.
In even a small conflict with Russia or China they could bring them all down.
One could argue the US has already ceded control of outer space to the Chinese when we decided to monitize space rather than militarize it. Will SpaceX and Blue Orgin offer any offensive/defensive capabilities to America? Apologies of course to the X-37 B.
