FIU professor: Collapsed Surfside building showed signs of subsidence in ‘90s (Champlain Towers - Miami)

FIU professor: Collapsed Surfside building showed signs of subsidence in ‘90s

The area where a building partially collapsed in Surfside, Fla. showed signs of land subsidence in the 1990s, according to space-based radar data analyzed by an FIU professor.

The 2020 study conducted by FIU Institute of Environment Professor Shimon Wdowinski identified the 12-story Champlain Towers South condominium as the one place on the east side of the barrier island where land subsidence was detected from 1993 to 1999. But land subsidence in and of itself likely would not cause a building’s collapse, according to Wdowinski, an expert in space geodesy, natural hazards and sea level rise.

“When we measure subsidence or when we see movement of the buildings, it’s worth checking why it happens,” Wdowinski said. “We cannot say what is the reason for that from the satellite images but we can say there was movement here.”

Western Miami Beach saw subsidence over larger areas but that was expected because homes there are built on reclaimed wetland. Areas where land is subsiding are more likely to experience more serious effects of sea level rise, according to the study.

n the 1990s, Miami Beach experienced subsidence at the rate of 1-3 millimeters per year, which could add up to a few inches of movement over a decade, Wdowinski said. It was significantly slower compared to other parts of the planet Wdowinski has studied. Mexico City, for example, is subsiding at a rate of 15 inches per year.

The researcher believes the same technology he used to detect land subsidence could be used to detect vulnerable buildings and help prevent future catastrophes.

The study was published in the journal Ocean & Coastal Management."

While watching the live feed on Agenda Free TV this A.M. I saw several comments about how people denying global warming sea-level rise are now getting some kind of lesson. This despite the fact some apparent sea-level ‘rise’ is actually due to land subsidence.

Made me think of the pictures from the G-7 summit in Cornwall. A pic from 95 years ago taken at the same angle and likely from pretty much the same spot shows the ocean level the same.

Correct, as far as the sinking being the lone cause - which is exactly what the professor said.

However, it will almost certainly be found to be a contributing factor. To what degree, remains to be seen.

It's going to be a combination of factors including engineering/construction/maintenance as well as the ground it was built on.

“... and sea level rise.”

I’ve lived in Florida my entire 67 years. When you stop in at restaurants and hotels along the beach, they invariably have photos on the walls of the beaches taken anywhere from the teens through recent years. The obvious thing is, the tideline is about in the same place regardless of the year the photos were taken. In many cases the buildings in the photos are the same ones you can walk outside and see today. The sea level has not risen in Florida since at least the invention of photography. Whenever a writer mentions global warming, sea rise, etc. it’s not because it’s real, it’s because you pretty much have to pay homage to this religious belief to get your article published.

Sounds like it was built on swamp land “reclaimed wet lands”.

Also of note - It was the first building to be built in the area after Miami-Dade County placed a moratorium on new developments during the 1970s.

May have some role to play in the construction of the building.

Could this be more asymetric “soft target” warfare?

Global warming dood it. To find out how, we’ve got to see Trump’s tax returns. And impeach him again.

Whatayou mean! The sea level rises twice a day, and goes especially high under a full moon. That PROVES global warming is real!/s

I heard earlier they were doing construction a few days ago at the adjacent building, what that has to do with it doesn’t make sense either. I have heard all the time about balconies collapsing(Too many people on it at one time) but entire buildings pancaking is just weird

I think subsidence is the reason for a lot (if not most) of the “rising sea level” stories.

subsidence NOUN the gradual caving in or sinking of an area of land.
