Hawley introduces bill to hire 100,000 new police officers

Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., on Wednesday introduced legislation to hire 100,000 new police officers across the U.S. and boost optimism among police and communities.

The bill would provide federal grants to locales to boost new police hires; increase penalties for assaulting federal officers by 50%; develop programs to protect the private information judges, prosecutors, and law enforcement officials; extend concealed carry rights to federal judges and prosecutors; increase service programs for federal officers; and more.

"It's absolutely vital that we keep American families safe. That is the bottom line, and right now, too many Americans aren't. Why aren't they? Because … violent crime is up by over 30% in cities across the country," Hawley said Wednesday on "America's Newsroom" "Unfortunately, that includes my home state of Missouri. We need more cops. We shouldn't be defunding the police. We should be supporting them."

Didn’t BJ Clinton do that during the 90s? Hire 3 officers, take the money, allow 4 to retire and not replace them and not have to account for the three new ones or the funds.

that might work if the little tin god communist nazi types can be weeded out before hiring them. There has to be a better metric for doing that than the one that is currently being used.

Police are a local issue and should remain that way.
The feds should have no involvement.

If Portland wants to be lawless, let them.

Very Clinton:

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Just a dozen days after money became
available, President Clinton today announced the first round of police hiring grants under the new crime bill, an important step toward his goal of putting 100,000 police on America’s streets.

It’s not his job to hire police. That’s up to the people in each locality.

Exactly.

Glad to have gotten rid of Claire but Hawley’s turning out to be a silly man or worse. He thinks big city dems are actually going to put that money into hiring cops?

Do NOT federalize the police. I know he means well, but this will end badly.

Not only no, but hell no. Citizens in law abiding areas are NOT responsible for paying for the police in areas that insist on defunding. Let the blue cities pay for their own police (or lack of).

Now I see what the “defund police” program was about.

Blue cities stop paying for police, crime increases, Federal Government steps in with Federal tax dollars to pay for police.

Red states are paying for police in blue cities. Very cynical. Why are Republican politicians going along with this?

…boost optimism among police and communities

WHAT is he smoking? We are up against well trained and dedicated Marxist shock troops. This will do nothing at all to cure that infection.

Yeah...that’s what I remember as well.

Odd that WJC’s number of 100,000 new cops is the same as Biden’s new tally. Think the population might have grown somewhat in 30+ years. Just more demonrat Three Card Monte ( wait...is using that cultural appropriation, micro-aggression, white privilege or sumpin’...hard to stay current ;>)

What does/ought the federal government have to do with local policing and financing local policing? For the most part, nothing at all.

So why is GOP Hawley offering his bill?

He is offering it to sound like his federal financing effort is all about helping the police. No, it’s about trying to buy Conservative “support the police” votes, with the Dims tactic - expanding the federal budget into local government affairs; which in time brings local government - how it operates - under more and more federal dictates, as all federal money goes with federal policy rules/mandates.

Great, the police force staffed by who?

Not cops who sign up to protect and serve since they are not allowed to do so.

Entering SC on I-95 just after South of the Border, the Phoenix PD has a billboard looking for recruits. SC? Wouldn’t they get better bang for their advertising buck in Seattle, the Twin Cities and Chitown?
