WASHINGTON -- In a ruling that could help push changes in college athletics, the Supreme Court on Monday unanimously sided with a group of former college athletes in a dispute with the NCAA over rules limiting certain compensation.

The full boat scholarship is not worth that much—the students are given easy passes and learn little that will help them in later life.
Time to end the farce and make them professionals.

The Supreme Court upheld a lower court ruling that would allow student-athletes to get some additional education-related benefits like reimbursements for academic expenses and internships, though that ruling still kept in place other limits like being directly compensated for playing on sports teams.
Student-athletes had sued the NCAA alleging it was violating federal antitrust laws with its rules that limit student compensation.
The NCAA had asked the court to strike down the court’s ruling and let them keep all the restraints on athletes’ benefits in place, claiming the court should apply an “extremely deferential standard” to the organization since it’s an “a joint venture among members who must collaborate” on athlete compensation instead of a monopoly subject to antitrust rules.

Most college athletes do not get full boat scholarships.
This was a cowardly ruling.
Actually, I’m too pissed off right now to type. So I better just shut the hell up.

It can cost $200,000 or more to attend a 4 yr top ranked college. Even if the school passes the Football player for doing nothing it is still worth $200,000 to get in the door without a scholarship.
Perhaps this will inspire alumni not to give to NCAA sports teams?

If the schools weren’t making money off attendance, the TV contract and merchandise....I wouldn’t say much of anything. Univ of Alabama makes around $33-million a year for example.
The real issue...how you’d divide up the loot, and admit that only thirty-odd schools in America make real money. The rest, if you figured the travel required, the uniforms, and such...basically break even.

But if they get injured playing they lose the scholarship, which makes it a pile of crap.
I’ve sometimes wondered how sports have evolved, in recruitment of professional players.
Baseball has always had minor leagues, and top high school players generally go to the minor leagues, rather than to play college baseball.
Top football and basketball players coming out of high school traditionally have gone to college, and from college get drafted into the NFL or NBA.
Then again, college football and college basketball are big spectator sports, with major TV contracts and generate money and publicity for the colleges. College baseball is not nearly on the same level as football and basketball in those ways.
And to compare in another way, minor league baseball players get paid. They don’t get paid much, but they are paid for playing.
Why would colleges being able to give athletes computers and internships upset you this much?
NCAA is corrupt. Division I athletes on basketball and football should be compensated.
