Even police departments are feeling the squeeze of the U.S.’s historic ammo shortage, a crunch that began last year amid the COVID-19 pandemic, ratcheted up during the Black Lives Matter-led demonstrations last summer, and has not let up since.
Police from Detroit to Florida to Illinois have all reported struggling to acquire ammunition for basic police work like range-training exercises.
Chief John Blair of the Taylor Police Department in Michigan recently said his officer’s firearm proficiency is tested three times a year, but one test had to be canceled because of the ammunition shortage. The COVID pandemic also cut down on officer’s range practice.
"The officers don’t have enough trigger time and we are always concerned where those rounds go if we do have to fire that weapon," Blair told local TV station WDIV Channel 4.
Prices have also spiked amid the record demand, with officials and citizens lucky enough to find ammo paying top dollar.
The spike was last year initially driven by fears of the COVID-19 crisis before being spiked higher as the demonstrations last summer sparked spawned violence and property damage.
The shortage has also spilled over into businesses that rely on guns – and ammunition – to keep up a cash flow. One firearms training company owner in Alaska told a local news outlet: "If we don’t have ammo, we don’t have students. So it’s pretty serious for us."
I’m hearing good things the last couple of days. Sadly, we had a triple homicide in town, yesterday. Looks like the guy tried to kill three people in stealing a truck, drove to a cash business,..a marijuana dispensary, where he shot one person dead...then to a sporting goods store where he was lucky to find ammo, and then out of town.
So if the jack booted thugs don’t have enough ammo, who does?
;-)
Prices have came down a fair amount. Still higher than a year ago.
“ratcheted up during the Black Lives Matter-led RIOTS last summer, and has not let up since.”
There fixed it
Yeah, If the popo is defunded, the army’s not using it, and now the Feds can’t get it… please explain the supply and demand problem!
You beat me to it!
Expensive but available.
There’s more to this ammo shortage than companies not being able to make it.
In digging through some old ammo cans I came upon some 5.56 MM I bought exactly fifty years ago. Hope it still shoots!
Found lots of OLD ammo for guns I no longer have.
Wish I had the 400 rounds of M-2 ball I burned up last year.
38 cents/rd for 1000 rounds of Winchester 9mm 115 gr.
Where?
If Texas had a primer factory, I think most of this could be dealt with.
I reload and am in pretty good shape except for a couple of caliber’s of brass and small pistol primers.
I don’t own an AR or shoot 5.56 (.223) ammo. I can reload it and 5 other rifle calibers. Only load 38Special/357Mag pistol ammo.
Maybe the government should go into the sorage of those millions of rounds each government agency bought up under Obama to keep them out of the hands of citizens.
I can’t find 9mm for much less than $1/bullet.
Where did you buy yours?
Ammoseek.com
The bullet itself shouldn’t cost nearly that much.
There’s plenty of ammo out there, but it’s not 2010 prices, anymore.
