A month ago, I went to Maryland to see my ailing mother. I learned from friends that Baltimore has a terrible police shortage. They need 1,100 but have only 500 officers. It's happening because the political class is failing to let the police do their job.
Well, something has to give, because local businesses are threatening to hold back money. This is the story:
More than three dozen businesses in Baltimore's Fells Point are threatening to withhold tax and permit payments amid "chaos and lawlessness" that they say has been "going on for far too long," according to local reports.
The coalition of 37 businesses sent a letter Tuesday to officials, including the mayor, council president, police commissioner and state's attorney, complaining about illegal alcohol and drug sales, public drinking, poor trash pickup and parking enforcement, and other problems, according to several local reports.
They are calling for Baltimore officials to restore "basic and essential municipal services."
"[W]e are fed up and frustrated, and we now realize that nothing will change unless we demand action," the letter states, according to local affiliate FOX Baltimore.
Can you believe that this is happening in a major U.S. city?

Good for them! Gulag soon to follow....
Bet all of those business owner vote a straight (D) ticket at every election. And will ontinue to do so regardless of how this particular situation pans out.
This leaves Baltimore’s leaders with two options:
A. They can take these concerns seriously, and try to fix the crime problem.
B. They can ignore the concerns, and instead take legal action against the business owners.
I’m guessing Baltimore will go with plan B.
Sure I can. I've been watching the collapse since the late 1960s. Republics don't collapse overnight. It's a slow steady process.
RE: I’m guessing Baltimore will go with plan B.
So, why bother staying? Close the business and move elsewhere.
Actually it's because of the VOTING CLASS failing to elect representatives that give a shit.
The defining episode in recent Baltimore history was that fiasco at Camden Yards when the baseball fans were all trapped inside the stadium while a riot raged outside. The Baltimore Orioles were then forced to play their next home game in an empty stadium because of concerns about the safety of their fans.
This happened back in 2015. What have these business owners thinking over the years that have passed since then?
What's the point of this "tax protest?" I'm surprised they don't just all close down en masse and relocate somewhere else.
“It’s happening because the political class is failing to let the police do their job.”
They’re NOT failing.
They’re implementing their agenda of destruction.
So they are quite successful.
It's less than 600,000 today.
I think it's a stretch to call Baltimore a "major U.S. city" anymore. It's a fetid sh!t-hole.
Thay can also take Conceal and Carry classes.
Phillips Seafood in the Inner Harbor was my go-to stop when driving on I-95 for years until it became impossible to not notice the change. Baltimore is a drive by for me now. I’d rather pack a sandwich.
I'd look for spontaneous late night fires. I've seen this movie before.
The next step for these businesses is to hire some muscle to persuade the criminals to leave this ‘hood alone. Criminals are a cowardly bunch so usually take off for easier pickens.
Last week, I went with two friends, one a native Baltimorian, to visit a botanical conservatory in Baltimore. All along our route there, my native friend pointed out the gorgeous architecture and how street after street of lovely homes had been allowed to fall into near-ruin. Block after block, there were blacks sitting on porch steps drinking beer or smoking, surrounded by unraked leaves and garbage in their yards. I remarked that it didn’t cost anything to clean up one’s yard, and that apparently the people we saw were content to sit in squalor and blame their circumstances on others. I’m sure all the people we saw were D voters, who kept voting D, even though their lots had obviously not improved by doing so. I guess they were too lazy and uninterested in taking a hand in their own uplifting to do any research about alternative candidates. And so, the corruption and decay which has become Baltimore goes on.
Baltimore has been one of the cities in which making a wrong turn can get you killed for many years.
It’s a crying shame. I used to enjoy going to Baltimore to eat and hang out at the Inner Harbor and Fells Point. No more. The people of Baltimore are getting what they vote for.
Confiscation of their property and redistribution to the homeless will be the local governments next move.
Betcha you enjoyed “The Wire”?
It’s a pretty good bet most of the people voted the morons in so my care meter is broken.
