Teachers express concern about new laws banning critical race theory

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — As middle school teacher Brittany Paschall assembled a lesson plan on the history of the Negro Baseball Leagues, she wondered how she might have to go about it differently next year under a new Tennessee state law that prohibits teaching certain concepts of race and racism.

The unit was about baseball, but more importantly, it was about segregation and racism in America.

“I kept thinking, in light of this bill, if this were next year, how would I teach this to my students?” said Paschall, an English teacher in Nashville. “Do we teach students to ignore tough subjects?”

Laws setting guiderails for classroom instruction on race passed this year in Republican-controlled states have left some teachers worried about how they will be enforced. Particularly in districts with large numbers of people of color, educators say they worry everyday discussions about students’ experiences could land teachers in hot water.

In response to a push for culturally responsive teaching that gained steam following last year’s police killing of George Floyd, Republican lawmakers and governors have championed legislation to limit the teaching of material that explores how race and racism influence American politics, culture and law. The measures have become law in Tennessee, Idaho and Oklahoma and bills have been introduced in over a dozen other states.

Professional teachers associations and some school boards have blasted the laws as disrespecting teachers’ judgment and opening the door to censorship.

“This is an assault on the craft of teaching,” said Paschall, who is Black. “It’s asking me to show up and ignore parts of my own identity.”

Although I know nothing about it it's not difficult to imagine that the Negro Baseball League...and one or more of its players...were treated badly....unfairly.

However that doesn't mean that this is now...and always has been...the most evil country on earth.

Why is that even in a lesson plan?

I think that is a good idea. If her race dictates so much of how she instructs, perhaps this is to stressful and she can find relaxing work at the Safeway or Kroger.

“Do we teach students to ignore tough subjects?”

A bold faced lie.

They are not addressing tough subjects, that are manipulating them to indoctrinate kids. In many cases just as they were indoctrinated.

Paschall, who is black, seems to think the only subject in her world is her racist hobbyhorse.

I have a family member in public education. Has to work with a history teacher that is black. Doesn’t matter what the state mandated curriculum requires. Everything is racism and slavery. Racism and slavery and nothing more. Gives the kids answers to required tests rather than teach the material. They are terrified of firing her. Move her from school to school as parents complain.

The interesting point though is that she is an English teacher, not a history teacher so why is she teaching history of the Negro Baseball League? Not her subject.

“”You can teach the history of the Negro Leagues without infusing it with Communist propaganda.””

If she hasn’t figured that out by now, she has no business in the classroom anyway. She’s looking for something that offends her. Took 7 paragraphs to get to the race of the teacher. As if we needed any help IDENTIFYING her.

“ignore parts of my own identity”? REALLY! Has THAT ever crossed her mind before? If it’s happening now to her simply because of this garbage idea of race theory, it shows she should be selling tokens at toll bridges and unfit for any classroom anywhere - too easily fed and led!

“All you stupid parents just sit back and shut up. We teachers know what’s best for your little darlings.”

The arrogance is astounding, but not surprising.

“This is an assault on the craft of teaching,” said Paschall, who is Black. “It’s asking me to show up and ignore parts of my own identity.”

Then go teach in inner city NY, Philly, Baltimore, Washington, or Atlanta. You'll really get in touch with your identity there.

“Do we teach students to ignore tough subjects?”

How about you teach them how to read, write, and speak standard English, do basic math, and compose a coherent paragraph.

Once 90% of your students can do that at or above grade level we can worry about other things.

Why is a English teacher doing a lesson plan on “history of the Negro Baseball Leagues”? Back in the day English teacher taught English not history.

That would be a good question to ax her. And ax her about English.

She could teach a class on African technological discoveries that benefited mankind. Or have recess.

“I kept thinking, in light of this bill, if this were next year, how would I teach this to my students?”

You teach that Capitalism, talent and meritocracy overcame racism in baseball.

Branch Ricky wanted the best players he could afford so he hired Jackie Robinson and he made it work.

Eventually all the other teams would have to acknowledge that great talent was sitting wasted in the negro leagues. If they didn’t hire them someone else would and they would be at the bottom of the stats wondering why they waited.

It’s just that simple.

Why is an English teacher concerned about an historical event ?

She can talk about the basic facts. But don’t make a big production out of it, like having students dramatize it, writing essays, debating it, writing book reports, watching movies about it, etc. No need to etch it into their brains so that is all they think about. They can’t move forward if they are stuck in the past.

If this “teacher” does not know the difference between teaching about the history of racism, civil right, etc. and “Critical Race Theory” then they don’t need to be in the classroom.
