"If you look at our numbers year over year, month over month, we're actually trending in the right direction," Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said Tuesday.
Mayor Lightfoot made a startling claim after the Sun-Times reported a huge increase in the number of Chicago children wounded or killed by guns.
The mayor said she was on the South and West sides last weekend when an astounding 63 people of all ages were shot.
"Many of the people that are being shot are being shot by people who look just like them, similar age. And so this whole of government approach that we're taking to public safety to really focus on those most dangerous areas in our city, the 15 beats or zones, a lot of that work is focused around supporting young people," Lightfoot said.
The mayor campaigned on a promise to reduce the bloodshed and has offered a series of excuses for failing to do so. She has blamed the pandemic, lax gun laws in nearby states, and a dysfunctional criminal justice system, among other things.
On Tuesday, she once again went after the local court system.
"We’ve got to get the criminal courts back open. We've gotta actually have criminal trials. So people are getting their day in court. And the victims feel like they're being heard by the criminal justice system," Lightfoot said.

At some point, the gun violence is bound to trend downward — because people can’t die twice.
She’s right. This is what the left truly wants. Pay no attention to words. Actions and results prove a person’s intentions. This is the right direction for her and her Party. This is what they create at every turn - death and destruction.
Mayor Lightfoot is an absolute bafoon! She does not have a clue which direction is up! Poor soul!
I’m pretty sure she doesn’t care what you think, so she’s not insulting your intelligence.
Instead, she’s insulting the intelligence of Chicago voters.
They elected her. Her comments are insults to their intelligence, but they also reflect an accurate assessment of her voters’ intelligence.

Sounds like her plan is to let all the blacks in Chicago kill each other off to the point where their murder rate is zero.

2020 weekend tally: 5 killed, 38 wounded
2019 weekend tally: 5 killed, 42 wounded
2018 weekend tally: 10 killed, 30 wounded
2017 weekend tally: 7 killed, 38 wounded
2016 weekend tally: 7 killed, 39 wounded
2015 weekend tally: 5 killed, 24 wounded
2014 weekend tally: 3 killed, 33 wounded
The 63 total shot far surpasses any of the previous 7 years, although the 5 killed is about average - which means once their aim improves, things are going to look really, really bad.
So maybe she means "leveling off" is "trending in the right direction."
If the data is inconvenient, maybe the first derivative of the data will be more helpful. And if the fist derivative is a problem, maybe the second derivative will work for you.
