Mayoral loss in Hispanic-heavy Texas city sets off Dems’ alarms

A Republican has won a mayoral race in a South Texas Hispanic Democratic bastion, sparking celebration from the GOP nationwide and alarm from some Democrats.

Why it matters: Javier Villalobos' victory Saturday in Mexican American-majority McAllen, Texas, comes as some Latino Democrats say their party has been ignoring Mexican Americans in Texas, New Mexico and California as the Republican Party makes dents in areas once solidly blue.

Villalobos, an attorney and former chair of the Hidalgo County GOP, beat Veronica Whitacre by about 200 votes in a nonpartisan race where Democrats have dominated for years.

His victory drew praise from former Trump 2020 campaign adviser Steve Cortes, who tweeted, "Amazing news! McAllen, Texas, is a major border town of 140,000 people. 85% Hispanic — and just elected a Republican mayor."

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican, joined conservatives on social media to congratulate Villalobos and say Hispanic voters are opening up to populist, Republican messages.

The bilingual Villalobos ran on improving the economy in a border town where nearly a fourth of residents live in poverty but is one of the safest communities in the nation, FBI crime statistics show.

"South Texas is very conservative and Hispanics here have always voted Democratic because of our parents and grandparents out of tradition," Villalobos told Axios.

"Hopefully, they are opening up their eyes. Competition is good."

Between the lines: Former president Trump made gains with Hispanics in South Texas by shifting from rhetoric about immigration to fears surrounding the economic impact of COVID-19 shutdowns, according to preliminary findings by research firm Equis that were reviewed by Axios....

The earthquake occurs when the Hispanic pro-slavery democrats are thrown out of congress.

Trust me on this. If Hispanics start voting republican, the demorats will build the wall in record time.

While I enjoy hearing this, on election does not a movement make...

Local politics and candidates could have had more to do with this than any party affiliations.

We’ll see if this is a fundamental shift or just a one off.

And they'll start rounding them up and sending them back.

Because so many people don’t care to turn out in Mayoral Elections. Is that so hard to understand?

Turnout for local elections is often abysmal where I live compared to National Elections, especially the presidential Election. This is likely just a case of many people just didn’t care to show up and vote because they didn’t care about the election, until the results happened.

Glad to see it, but the Republican had a hispanic name, and the donkey did not. Given the sophistication of American voters (hispanic or not), I wouldn’t be surprised if that was a (if not the) major factor.

The Demon Rats didn’t think they needed a fraud machine there....until now.

Look for temporary residents from Chicago, Philadelphia, she’s move on to “help” with “voter registration”. Fakebook might even donate money to “upgrade voting systems”.

We’ll if the Stupid Party actually gets their head out of their @ss, listens to PDJT about a permanent America First agenda, and then spends time at the local level recruiting candidates with a solidly America First agenda, perhaps this won’t have to be a one-off.

As the Demo rats become more anti-Religion i believe more Hispanic voters will turn them off. We need to highlight the lefts shift to atheism and their contempt for Christians!!

This is, I am convinced, one big reason the Demon Rats aren’t clamoring for an influx of central and eastern African immigrants. Christianity is strong and the people are socially conservative among African believers.

Wonder why Demon Rats aren’t interested in bringing African Christians to America.

Fort Worth just elected a Republican Mayor.

Dallas and FW have been touted as Blue by the Dems for several years. I don’t expect Dallas to change.

The ‘donkey’ candidate who lost was the incumbent Mayor.

I am not denying TRUMP support.. however extrapolating TRUMP’s support time general party support is not proven.

Like I said, this is one local election.. is it a bellweather or is it a one off??

Not enough data to know...
