WASHINGTON (AP) — A unanimous Supreme Court ruled Monday that thousands of people living in the U.S. for humanitarian reasons are ineligible to apply to become permanent residents.

Justice Elena Kagan wrote for the court that federal immigration law prohibits people who entered the country illegally and now have Temporary Protected Status from seeking “green cards” to remain in the country permanently.

The designation applies to people who come from countries ravaged by war or disaster. It protects them from deportation and allows them to work legally. There are 400,000 people from 12 countries with TPS status...

what they actually did was rule that if the alien entered the country unlawfully then became a protected refugee or asylum receiver, the fact that they entered illegally precludes them from getting a green card. They have to return whence they came and then reapply for the green card and lawfully immigrate.

If the person was a lawful immigrant that obeyed the law to get in the country and received asylum, they could then, at a later date, follow the process of getting a green card and then citizenship according to the law.

“Unanimous. That includes the Wise Latina.”

The idea that this court could come up with a case they all agreed on is astonishing. It could be that the liberals are forcing Congress to address the illegal immigrant issue with unambiguous legislation that allows everyone from everywhere to come to the United States. They have a golden moment, until 2022, to make anything they want to happen, happen. We could end up with DC becoming a state, zero immigration control and a Supreme Court divided into two or more courts handling, criminal and civil cases and with three more Supremes in each court. I’ll be surprised if they don’t make such a move, because history says they’ll lose their overwhelming majority shortly.

Bingo. The Rats could care less about this or any other ruling. I know if I was a Rat this feeble ruling wouldn’t mean squat to my party’s immigration agenda. They aren’t losing a moment’s sleep over it.

A minor inconvenience for them.

"Another law for the Rats to ignore ... "

They'll just assign them a different status to get around it.

He probably would, but I don’t quite see the connection.
It seems to be a good decision.

In a rare move, Kagan writes something Constitutional.
