Nearly a half-century after a teenage girl was viciously stabbed to death in a Chicago suburb, genetic genealogy has led to an arrest.
Barry Lee Whelpley, 76, was arrested Wednesday at his home in Minnesota for the 1972 murder of Julie Ann Hanson, 15, who died of multiple stab wounds in Naperville, Illinois, according to the Naperville Police Department.
The police identified the suspect through his DNA left at the crime scene, using genetic genealogy. Since 2018, the technique has been used by police to identify more than 150 suspects in cold cases. The technique allows police to search family members who have voluntarily submitted their DNA to genealogy databases. Genetic genealogy first came to light in the case of serial rapist and murderer Joseph DeAngelo, a former police officer known as the “Golden State Killer.”

Finally closure for her family, which is a good thing.
However, while I find this ‘genetic genealogy’ fascinating and a useful tool for the Detectives, isn’t this another one of those ‘slippery slopes’ things as far as everyone’s privacy is concerned?
I know they ‘say’ that DNA doesn’t lie, but lab workers might. I mean, look at all the lies we’ve been spoon-fed this past year, alone. :(
I’ve been pointing out for some years that while genetic tech may have reversed some bad convictions that ultimately it will make convictions more certain and with that remove objections against the death penalty.
Maybe that sort of realization is why, along with defunding police, some of the Left now seemingly want to limit the use of genetic tech?
Lots of Biden voters are criminals. A very typical democrat.
I very much doubt whether that will have any effect whatsoever.
Just the Democrats playing to their criminal base voters.
maybe ten years or so a geneticist made this awesome discovery that RACIAL phenotype could be derived from DNA genotype.
Yep, one could infer with about 95% accuracy the actual race (within certain narrow parameters) of a suspect in a case.
Surprisingly (ahem) the overwhelming number of BLACK/african-americans showing up in these studies brought the full weight of the “Just Us” department, NAASCP and other fellow travelers and this discovery, deserving of a Nobel prize, was relegated to “just a curiosity” with no practical application in police/detective work.
Science is racist, don’t you know.
I read just the other day that some Rat Party Congresscritter has introduced legislation to ban the use of these websites in criminal investigations.

Maybe he has been careless with his DNA (I am assuming its a he).
“isn’t this another one of those ‘slippery slopes’ things”
Yes. Count on it.
I thought the same thing. Today’s Rat Party is the party of chaos.
“Isn’t this another one of those ‘slippery slopes’ things as far as everyone’s privacy is concerned?”
I don’t see many ways this could become a tool of the police state. It’s easy to see how NSA spying, for instance, can and has been turned against political opponents.
DNA only comes into play in crimes where someone is leaving blood or other fluids behind. Those are unambiguously crimes.
Genetic genealogy only gives you a suspect. The police still must collect the evidence for a conviction.
“She was abducted, raped and stabbed 36 times...”
He would have been 27 at the time. The story said he was thrice divorced. That being 1972 out in the burbs chances are pretty good he was married when he did this.
Sounds like a horrible, brutal crime. Hate to ask the question, but I wonder if there are more "cold cases" from this area back then?
Good to be reminded of that. You’d think I’d know that based upon the number of ‘murder shows’ I watch in a given week, LOL!
Also - NEVER take your cellphone with you. They can ‘ping’ you all over the countryside while you’re committing your crimes! ;)
Well done.
It will be easy to determine who attended a political rally or church that the powers that be frown upon.
We’ll hear, “if you’re not doing anything wrong, you have nothing to worry about” when the tools are rolled out.
Alleged suspect Barry Lee Whelpley was arrested at his home in Minnesota.
Julie Ann Hanson had been raped and stabbed 36 times.
50 years ago Barry was about 27.
Yes, I’m sure they are looking into such possibilities. At his age, Barry may confess just to unburden himself.
