Princeton University will no longer require students to take Latin or ancient Greek to earn a classics degree, a change that comes as part of a larger effort “to address systemic racism” on campus.
Princeton faculty approved the elimination of the Classic’s Department’s “classics track,” which required students to have an intermediate proficiency in one of the two languages before entering the track.
Classics professor Josh Billings, director for undergraduate studies, said faculty believe the change will improve the Classics Department because it will add “new perspectives” to it.
“Having people who come in who might not have studied classics in high school and might not have had a previous exposure to Greek and Latin, we think that having those students in the department will make it a more vibrant intellectual community,” Billings said.
The changes were given “new urgency” because of Princeton President Christopher Eisgruber’s call to “to address systemic racism.”

A major in classics is not just some overview of the topic, like someone who wants to read the Iliad or some of Ovid's poetry. No, it's because you want to make your life studying it. How can you study Greece and Rome and make new discoveries if you can't read what they wrote? At most you'll end up a dilettante reading other people's works second hand. You can't just rely on Google translation of a newly exposed mosaic at Pompeii.
If a student said "I want to study Babylon and Assyria instead" then Classics isn't the right degree. Go to Archaeology instead.
To be replaced with Ebonics.
Maybe they’ll provide other options, such as:
Pig Latin
Emojis
Way back when, while attending 9th grade in a Catholic HS I took Latin I.
I struggled through it and Sister ‘realized’ I tried so when I was preparing to go to a Public HS for 10th grade she passed me (just) so long as I promised to not ‘embarrass’ her and take Latin II.
Funny part is that when I went to the PS, the Latin counted as my ‘foreign’ language and NY State also gave me a full credit for Religion for my final tally and being as I was so far ‘ahead’ of my peers in other subjects, I was able to take typing in my Junior year....
Of course this was 1954-55 so a boy in typing stood out as the second half of the year was home ec (I think).
As another stated, Latin is basically essential for learning or at least comprehending word root structure etc etc
I think the African click languages would kill the students this de-Latinization is aimed at.
Just hand them a diploma when they show up and stop all the BS.
“Ilegitmus non carborundum!”
Indeed. The left is ‘carburunduming’ us to death.
And we’re sitting on our Obamaholes letting them get away with it.
How can you get a degree in the classics without studying the classics?
“Having people who come in who might not have studied classics in high school and might not have had a previous exposure to Greek and Latin...”

Yes, it’s crazy to think one might go to college to be exposed to ideas you don’t know.
ἐν ἀρχῇ ἦν ὁ λόγος, καὶ ὁ λόγος ἦν πρὸς τὸν θεόν, καὶ θεὸς ἦν ὁ λόγος.
“Then how are you a classics major?”
Next they’ll say you don’t need to take Japanese to be a Japanese major.
Or math to be a math major.
I had Latin in high school. I am brushing up on my Latin jokes for my high school reunion next year. Here is one that will make you laugh hysterically.
A Roman walks into a bar and orders a martinus. The bartender says “Do you want a martini?” The Roman becomes annoyed and says “If I wanted a double I would have asked for it!”
Well maybe they can substitute classic African literature. Wait...
Sort of like a participation medal or that atheist minister up in Canada.
"sunt" would be better here.
The stupidification continues.......
How the he’ll do you have a “classocs” department without Greek and Latin??
STUDY ZULU?
F** these ridiculous sewers. They no longer serve a useful function. Tear them all down and arrest the professors.
It is now officially the time to start calling Princeton, Princeton Community College.
