***no longer require students to take Latin or ancient Greek to earn a classics degree,***

I remember reading, about thirty years ago, of some deep dark African Dictator who insisted his people all have a classical Greek and Latin education.

So at some point we all have to live in grass huts and chuck spears to avoid the perception of “systemic racism”. Maybe not, but surely one cannot object to looting of flat screen TVs and sneaker stores to promote justice. Ok then, hold the line at extreme hate-yt 101. No? Well certainly don’t complain about males wearing their pants below their butts. After all, yt wears his pants above his butt. Can’t be acting white, can you? Forcing black males to wear their pants above their butts is systemic racism.

So it’s now “racist” to require knowledge of the two languages that are most pertinent to Classics studies? Probably the next step is to eliminate Classics studies entirely.

A polyglot genius friend of mine who knew both Greek and Latin (and Hindi, Arabic, Spanish, Quechwa, Gaelic, Portueguese, etc.) once told me that these efforts were to make sure that a certain elite stayed elite. Go ahead, get your Princeton degree in Classics without Latin OR Greek. Then when someone who has studied them claims the best Greek texts of the Scriptures say X, or that Socrates or St. Thomas Aquinas meant Y, you cannot make an informed counter to it based in those languages. Your lack of that knowledge will always be held over your head, sometimes by people with big egos, often by people with an agenda or who are otherwise acting in bad faith.

“How can anyone study classical antiquity without knowing the languages?

“Are there going to be no more translations?”

They used to publish interlinears for Latin authors. Each line of Latin text had an English translation of its Latin words below it.

" . . . we think that having those students in the department will make it a more vibrant intellectual community."

There should be a moratorium on the use of "vibrant." I can't stand the word.

And whatever happened to the idea of LEARNING something in college? If people haven't been exposed to Latin and Greek, TEACH THEM. The unstated assumption is that they are too lazy or stupid to learn something new. I studied Latin in Catholic school years ago, and as an adult I taught myself some Koine Greek. Neither are particularly hard to learn. Every bozo in my school learned some Latin.

Higher education is sort of an inside joke. Everyone knows it doesn’t advance learning, but no one dares say so. It funds the left, and gives it a way to reproduce itself. That’s all it does. That’s what it’s for.

OK, that and Sex Camp.

Shirking their duties, are they?

A school teaches, right?

Freed-slaves should have never have been be taught to read, eh?

Oh yes, that’s a great help and equalizer, oh great white education masters!

Worthless fools!

"How can you get a degree in the classics without studying the classics?"

You watch YouTube videos on what black professors think about the classics....

I am reading part of the biography of John Adams the second President of the United States who is quite an incredible guy and he easily cited Greek literature many times in his writings

Greek philosophy is one of the most important foundations for the moral underpinnings of all of the world society there’s no question about it

They were the first society in antiquity to have the time and the wherewithal to really start understanding and thinking about the human condition and philosophizing on preventing the failings

The Bible was around but wasn’t very popular and Christ had not appeared yet and so it was critical philosophy to start the moral foundation for the world

It is the folly of modern Falls to think that they can throw away all of the classic literature all of the incredible understanding that people of this world experience 202,000 years ago and think that they know better here in 2021

That’s fine. That simply elevates other schools who don’t bow to this nonsense within their classics department, notably Notre Dame springs to mind ... Ivy just handing out free win tickets to the next-tier club these days ...

All “systems” are the result of people establishing a process or procedure.

Only people can be racist. Jim Crow wasn’t “racist”, the individuals who created and implemented it were racists.

This systemic racist rhetoric is nonsense.

There’s actually a black classics professor - PhD at Princeton opposed to reading the Greek & Latin authors. The university that granted him his PhD should withdraw it !

“...we think that having those students in the department will make it a more vibrant intellectual community,” Billings said.”

Yes, introducing ignorance to the department nearly always makes for a more vibrant intellectual community.
