Volcano mystery: Researchers were baffled by 'supervolcano' discovery in Alaska

aska has been in the headlines in recent days after its Great Sitkin volcano erupted last week. Last Thursday, the US Geological Survey said a red warning had been raised – indicating that significant emission of volcanic ash into the atmosphere is likely. The Alaska Volcano Observatory said a "short-duration" explosive eruption of one-two minutes occurred at 5:04 GMT on Thursday, resulting in an ash cloud up to 15,000 feet above sea level.

They added: "Since that explosion, seismicity has decreased and satellite images show that the ash cloud has detached from the vent and is moving towards the east."

Alaska accounts for more than three-quarters of all US volcanoes that have erupted during the past 200 years, according to the observatory website.

Researchers have been compelled by volcanic activity in the region and were stunned when they found what could be a supervolcano in Alaska's Aleutian islands.

The cluster of volcanic islands could be a single giant volcano similar to that of the Yellowstone Caldera, an American Geophysical Union study said in December last year.

First thought: Where was “science” when we needed it? Don’t those people know everything?!

Second thought: Ash in the atmosphere? Could be a cold summer.

Another Supervolcano? Not very many worldwide, which is a good thing. The Supervolcano at Yellowstone erupted thousands of years ago and ended up covering Kanas with over 300 feet of Ash. Based on previous eruptions Yellowstone is overdue for another.

Only up to 15,000 feet and already detached from the vent. Ash doesn’t really start to impact climate until it reaches the 50,000+ foot level.

I find these things interesting but I don't worry about them erupting.

If one of these super volcanoes were to blow its top in my lifetime (and the clock is running out on it pretty fast), everything would be burnt to a crisp and we'd all be thumbing a riding down the road together.

Similar to global warming scare, which is less likely than some humungous volcano erupting.

Nothing any of us can do to stop Mother Nature.

That's because too many *scientists* in their arrogance, think they know it all.

Instead of being *stunned* because they discovered something they didn't know about, they should have figured they missed something and tried to figure out why or how.

Journalists don’t even know how to present physical geologic facts. Where exactly in the Aleutians is this Super Bowl? Or is it some top freaking secret amongst “journalists.”
