NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Newport News Police held a press conference Tuesday after there was an exchange of gunfire between a man and officers earlier that day.
Police Chief Steve Drew says the incident took place at Port Warwick after officers were trying to track down a wanted man.
At 10:45 a.m., officers were attempting to serve a fugitive with outstanding warrants from James City County who was located in a local apartment complex. Newport News Police Chief Steve Drew identified the suspect as 22-year-old Deston Coward.
"They originally saw him in the apartment complex over here around Thimble Shoals, he ran in this direction through the area here in Port Warwick. He actually entered a business and exited while officers gave chase."
A foot chase ensued in the area of Nat Turner Road in Port Warwick. Police say the suspect then began to fire at officers who returned fire.
No one was shot or injured, Police Chief Drew said.
A bystander, who has a concealed carry permit, is said to have confronted the man too, which gave officers enough time to get to him to take him into custody. Chief Drew emphasized that the situation could’ve been much worse if not for the "good Samaritan," because officials say the fugitive was considered “armed and dangerous.”
"He was able to hold him and detain him for a brief second as officers made it up the embankment and took Mr. Coward into custody," Chief Drew said. "I really want to thank the young man that did engage him and assisted the police today. He did an amazing job."
Police say Coward was charged with attempted capital murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm by a felon. Coward had pre-existing outstanding warrants for a probation violation out of York County and three counts of grand larceny out of James City County.
I'm guessing the Samaritan was black, or he would have been charged with a felony, maybe even a "hate crime". I hate to say it, but in a similar situation, I would hesitate to get involved, not for fear of the felon, but fear of the District Attorney and Attorney-General.
Kind of fitting his last name is Coward.
I feel for the guy in one sense; with a name like that, I’m sure that his life in the hood was tougher. Kinda predestined for this activity. That being said, there are plenty of folks that have easily preyed upon names or traits that suck it up, better themselves, and live well as an FU to the bullies and a-holes in their formative years. That’s why the victimization doctrine is a large part of the Demomarxist’s plan, creating criminals and other government dependents to exhaust us producers of our property and capital.
Yeah, couldn’t have been easy. Most kids these days are butterballs or snowflakes. I grew up on a street with about two dozen boys. We played hard, and fought hard. I was in the youngest 25% percentile as well as smaller than than about 80% of the guys on the street. I probably had a dozen concussions by the time I was 13 from no-pads football and fighting off bullies. Bullies only understand one thing. And that is pain. Watch a pack of puppies play. It is for fun, but it is also prepping them for life.
He could’ve changed his name as an adult though.
“... he would have been charged with a felony...”
Actually, I have to commend the individual as he did it right. He used his CCL to protect himself, and when the perp ran he let him go rather than open fire. This is textbook for a private citizen. Wish more would use this action as it would take the focus off the citizen and put the violent crime back on the criminal. It’s not an option to carry to shoot someone. It’s to protect yourself.

Coward is a tough name to have. Kinda like “A boy named Sue” but hes alrwady programmed. A name change would make him a johnny handsome.
Definitely Ami....
Never mind.
Fortunately, my dad retired during my early teens, and instilled work ethic by denying privilege that my mom had pretty much just let my brother and I have. Thanks dad. Anyway, he also realized how susceptible I was to an ass beating, (even after I had thinned up and developed as a teen) gave me some self defense training, taught me how to tolerate pain, and took me shooting. Thanks again, dad. Another plank of the Demomarxists, replace dads with government largesse and "protection".
I just remembered that when my dad was showing me how to defend myself, he told me that I would probably still get an ass beating in a fight, but they wouldn’t last as long LOL. Real good sense of humor, my old man had. Turns out he was right, sumbitch.
Why good Samaritans are armed police gives hat tip.
lol. We had a bit of an opposite experience. My Dad was based state-side and then got deployed over seas when I was 13. My mother, who grew up in the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl in TX, did the raising from then till I was 17. She taught me how not to be a barbarian, which is what I would have become. There was a boy down the street from me who incessantly picked on me and about twice my size. I had learned by that age to deal with guys bigger than me but this guy was a good fighter. My dad’s advice “Go get your baseball bat”. Which I did, and used to great affect. However, probably not the best advice..lol.
LoL Thanks a lot, Lucious. Now they’re gonna go and ban baseball bats.
lol. I’m ok with them banning the MLB, but they will have to pry my baseball bat from my cold dead hands ;-)
