Deep-rooted racism, discrimination permeate US military

For Stephanie Davis, who grew up with little, the military was a path to the American dream, a realm where everyone would receive equal treatment. She joined the service in 1988 after finishing high school in Thomasville, Georgia, a small town said to be named for a soldier who fought in the War of 1812.

Over the course of decades, she steadily advanced, becoming a flight surgeon, commander of flight medicine at Fairchild Air Force Base and, eventually, a lieutenant colonel.

But many of her service colleagues, Davis says, saw her only as a Black woman. Or for the white resident colleagues who gave her the call sign of ABW – it was a joke, they insisted – an “angry black woman,” a classic racist trope.

White subordinates often refused to salute her or seemed uncomfortable taking orders from her, she says. Some patients refused to call her by her proper rank or even acknowledge her. She was attacked with racial slurs. And during her residency, she was the sole Black resident in a program with no Black faculty, staff or ancillary personnel.

“For Blacks and minorities, when we initially experience racism or discrimination in the military, we feel blindsided,” Davis said. “We’re taught to believe that it’s the one place where everybody has a level playing field and that we can make it to the top with work that’s based on merit.”

In interviews with The Associated Press, current and former enlistees and officers in nearly every branch of the armed services described a deep-rooted culture of racism and discrimination that stubbornly festers, despite repeated efforts to eradicate it.

And she's still angry that she was held back? The chip on her shoulder is massive.

Sounds like the “trope” was accurate or at least it is now.

I spent 24 years in army military medical units. 10 years active duty 15 years reserves. I simply did not see the things she described.. Now some weird stuff happened but race wasn’t involved. We had a General come to the ER thinking he was having a heart attack. A bright young Dr treated the General and ruled out a heart attack. For the care and consideration given the General award the young Dr an article 15 because his hair was to long!

I was in the USN in the late 70s. I saw jaw dropping discrimination. Anyone who was black was virtually untouchable, and given preferential treatment at every turn.

Obama’s Everlasting Gobstopper of Victimhood is literally the only impactful thing the S.O.B. ever did to this country.

We will never be rid of it, at this point.

Blacks and Females have had an inside track on promotions in the military since before my time in the Army - in the early 90’s.

As for the call sign - perhaps she earned it, or perhaps it was bestowed because she was the exact opposite. One would have to know her and her peers to know for sure.

cranked :" More made up BS."

More "Woke" populism by a "woke" news source.
They had to do some 'reaching' as it took only 4 writers
to organize and present this dribble to "wokeism".

The military has provided a leg up for lots of minorities. This is bs. And eh, yeah, the government just sees you as a statistic. You get no special attention until you try to stop the gravy train. You really don’t want their special attention.

The military has a large percentage of black members and has for many years. Yes, they do kid one another with words that today civilians would call offensive. But they are buddies and respect one another, they have each others back and they together, without regard to skin color, are a mighty military force.

I’m gonna throw the BS flag on this one. 36 years in the Air Force...never saw any minority treated badly (just the opposite). Failure to salute her? If she took no action when it happened, that’s a failure in her leadership. Seems more like complaints from the entitled class.

At the start of Desert Shield I was the 1SG of the H7 ASI course for what is now a 92F at Ft Dix, D Co 36th Trans Bn.. Within a month we were graduating whole classes to Saudi Arabia.

Had this one POS tried to claim he was Muslim and wouldn’t fight his “brothers”. Told him ok, he could sit the war out in Ft Leavenworth. We’re about a week out from his class graduating and I get a call from the CQ, little POS has taken a handful of Tylenol and is in ICU. I went up to the hospital, was told he was ok but would be held for 2-3 days for observation. The next day me and the CO go do the “Command Visit” and take him his mail. We’re wrapping up the visit and the CO gets up to leave, I tell him “One more item, Sir” and instruct the shitbird to assume the position of Attention as best he can in bed. I pull out the Article 15 paperwork (Article 115 UCMJ Malingering) that I spent all morning getting done and read it to him. I have him and the CO sign it and tell him a JAG officer will make a bedside visit the next day, as a personal favor to me. I wanted to make sure he graduated with his class.

As we’re leaving the ward the Head Nurse, a black female Major who looks like she might have been at Valley Forge heads us off at the door. “1SG, can I see you a minute?” she asks. My CO whispers “Good Luck” and sprints for the door. Fearing the worst I stopped and said “Yes, Ma’am.” She said “1SG, I’ve been doing this job almost 30 years and I have NEVER seen any shit like I saw today.” I said “Yes, Ma’am, we had to do this so he could ship with his class. I wanted every one of them to see him get on that plane with them.” She looked at me and said “30 years…. never dreamed I’d see a man lay at attention in my hospital ward and get an Article 15.” Then she broke out a big grin and said “1SG, I just wanted to shake your hand. And if you don’t get that little whining piece of shit out of here soon somebody is gonna kill him, and I’d hate to waste 30 years on a little shit like him.”

The AP is so full of s**t that nothing short of a trainload of crap cars could hope to cope with the stuff coming out of our media.

I’ll take any of my fellow service members (most certainly including the blacks I’ve worked with) over ANY low T and even lower IQ modern “reporter”.

I hope and pray that I am around to see the media receive what they truly deserve. May their deaths be slow and painful.

When I was in the USAF I was denied a promotion even though I was at the top of the list. When I went to the CO asking why this happened he told me outright that under orders from 3rd AF that stripe (only one came down) was to go to “a minority”.

This happened in 1962 when I was stationed in the UK.
