Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) said Sunday that he will not be getting vaccinated against COVID-19.
During an interview with John Catsimatidis on his radio show on WABC 770 AM, Paul, an ophthalmologist, said he he’s making the personal decision because he’s already had COVID-19.
Paul tested positive for COVID-19 in March 2020. At the time, he was the first known senator to have contracted the disease.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends those that have recovered from COVID-19 to get vaccinated because experts are unsure how long natural immunity lasts.
However, the Kentucky senator told Catsimatidis that until he sees evidence suggesting that immunity from the vaccine is better than natural immunity, he’s not going to get vaccinated.
“Until they show me evidence that people who have already had the infection are dying in large numbers, or being hospitalized or getting very sick, I just made my own personal decision that I’m not getting vaccinated because I’ve already had the disease and I have natural immunity,” Paul said.
The comments come as the U.S. seeks to push through a decline in demand following the mad dash the jab earlier in the year. Data from the CDC shows that 60.8 percent of adults have received at least one vaccine, and 48.8 percent have been fully inoculated.
Several Republican senators including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), have urged Americans to get vaccinated. Paul's Kentucky colleague tweeted about his vaccination directly following his jab earlier in the year.
However, recent polling has shown that Republicans are more hesitant to get vaccinated than Democrats and independents.
One poll from PBS NewsHour/NPR/ Marist found that 41 percent of Republicans say they do not plan on getting vaccinated, compared to 4 percent of Democrats.
Paul has been critical of coronavirus restrictions and mask mandates, often sparring with the nation's top infectious disease expert Anthony Fauci during Senate panel hearings on the coronavirus response.
He said Sunday getting vaccinated should be a personal choice, and that no one should be forced to get vaccinated.
“In a free country you would think people would honor the idea that each individual would get to make the medical decision, that it wouldn’t be a big brother coming to tell me what I have to do,” Paul said.
“Are they also going to tell me I can’t have a cheeseburger for lunch? Are they going to tell me that I have to eat carrots only and cut my calories?” Paul continued. “All that would probably be good for me, but I don’t think big brother ought to tell me to do it.”
John Catsimatidis is an investor in The Hill.
Smart.
He knows what’s in them.. better than anyone you would think.
Of course not, he’s had COVID.
Immunity from having COVID is far superior and broader than immunity from the shots. Lasts for years.
And there is much more risk of an adverse effect from the shots if you previously had COVID.
And they have no idea how long immunity from their experimental biologic agent lasts, if it gives any at all.
What a bunch of nonsense recommending a vaccine after someone has had the disease, even for real vaccines.
Same here. I’m waiting 2+ years to see if people grow tails, 3rd eyes, develop twitches, whatever.
Go sell commonsense crazy someplace else. (sarc)
I’ll see your two years, and raise you three more.
“...41 percent of Republicans say they do not plan on getting vaccinated, compared to 4 percent of Democrats.“
Democrat voters trust Big Government and hate the Constitution which limits government authority.
Why should he… he’s already immune from actually having had the disease. Any new exposures he may have will simply strengthen his immunity.

Fauci: “It is certain that we will need vaccine boosters.”
He’s about as honest as a used car dealer, too.
So if the vaxx is dangerous or causes sterility, it looks like it will happen to lefties and the Deplorables will have the last laugh.
How convenient for them.
Job security and a financial gold mine to boot.
I greatly appreciate Rand Paul’s courage and honesty.
But this means he will have to wear a face diaper for the foreseeable future, since stores and restaurants are all changing their face mask requirement signs to include the phrase “unless you are fully vaccinated”.
So, if he’d just kept quiet like me and the wife, he could throw away the stupid face diaper - since nobody is being asked for proof of vaccination.
HOORAY Rand. How strong is Fauzi’s neck?

Some encouraging comments PGalt. Fauci not popular is he? Good to see..
The media treat him like God
This is a supposition parading as fact by invoking the term "experts". If pressed, the same "experts" would be forced to admit no one knows the long-term efficacy of the vaccines either.
The “cure” may be destroying natural immunity to other invasive critters.
