At its most severe, the coronavirus attacks the lungs, making it impossible to breathe without a ventilator. Landing in the hospital on a ventilator is bad. But worse is being told you can’t have one.
Hospitals in New York are running short.
Several years ago, after learning that the Empire State’s stockpile of medical equipment had 16,000 fewer ventilators than the 18,000 New Yorkers would need in a severe pandemic, state public-health leaders came to a fork in the road.
They could have chosen to buy more ventilators to back up the supplies hospitals maintain. Instead, the health commissioner, Howard Zucker, assembled a task force for rationing the ventilators they already had.

I imagine it will be somewhat shortly before the medical experts without a degree will be here saying ventilators are instruments of death and why would we need them? Buckle up — it will be fun.
I ‘ve seen the recent pic’s of unopened boxes of ventilators in a landfill.
Better people die than Trump gets any credit.
I never buy into this argument. How much money do we want hospitals to spend on equipment they might need maybe? Ventilators don’t last forever, they have to be maintained, they have to be replaced, new versions happen. The idea that we should have pandemic levels of ventilators for decade after decade without pandemics is just silly.
I have been working in healthcare for nearly 35 years, and I was surprised last year to find out that state “ventilator stockpiles” were a thing.
I had no idea. It made me wonder what other kinds of things are stockpiled by states that rot and molder in “Raiders of The Lost Ark” kinds of warehouses...
80% of people put on ventilators with covid died. I couldn’t say for sure but that’s evidence they either didn’t help or caused more harm.
No kidding. I have been in for 20 years and didn’t realize there were stockpiles either. But I suppose it makes sense.
Now the feds are doing it again. Diverting funds to the border to house the hoard coming over the border rather than funding replenishment of the National Strategic Stockpile.
What happened to all those ventilators that President Trump gave to deblahblah? Hmmmmm?
80% of people who have CoVID and placed on vents did not die. This is completely untrue. We will look back at this and there will be forever a black mark on medicine that we panicked and did not do what is the standard or norm based on anecdotal data.
Some things good will come out of this. Specifically proning protocols for ARDS being used in all ARDS cases will likely save many lives. The utilization of modalities like HFNC / Heated HF NC as an intermediate between oxymizer and NIPPV, and therapeutics targeted will usher in some significant improvements in quality and mortality.
Well maybe the news I got is fake, or old, but...
Yes, of course we should learn a lot from this experience.
It is old and truly I am not criticizing your post. This was the bad information, spread somewhat by my own profession early on. We also got swept up in emotion and did not continue the tried and true. The fact is that ARDS, including ARDS CoVID has about a 40% mortality once there is mechanical ventilation.
Ventilators have a lot of unpleasant side effects. By the time you’re on one they think you’re probably gonna die anyway.
Ah yes before the mask panic there was the ventilator panic. Just like all the money wasted on the hospital ships and the temporary hospital in Chicago. We was played.
There’s also a picture of many crates of new ventilators sitting in a landfill - I’ll try to find it. Couldn’t donate ‘em or wut? I assume it was a region that claimed they had a ventilator shortage and later didn’t know how to get rid of them without attracting attention. Unfortunately for them, someone photographed them. By the time the news crew went out to film, they were presumed mulched under (24 hrs+ delay)
Ventilators killed 9/10 patients that went on them.
I kind of does, but...knowing how nearly any government run thing goes, I could only imagine they would have rats nests in them...or worse!
I didn’t take it as criticism.
I’m like Joe Friday, just the facts.
If not that, then I’ll crack wise.
I like your style.
