Republicans have dumped Reagan for Trump
thehill ^ | 05/12/2021 | Albert Hunt

The choice between Elise Stefanik and Liz Cheney for a House Republican leadership post serves as a proxy war between Donald Trump and Ronald Reagan for the soul of the Party.

Reagan and Cheney — and Republicans generally — appear certain to be the losers.

For decades after he left office, Ronald Reagan was a glue that united Republicans, just as Franklin D. Roosevelt was for Democrats. Now Trump dominates the Republican Party; Liz Cheney had the audacity to tell the truth: that Trump lost the last election, which many of her House GOP colleagues are too cowardly to acknowledge.

What an absurd premise.

Reagan is dead.

Oh Lord, how I wish Rush Limbaugh was still alive so I could listen to his daily take of what’s going on. I miss him so much.

Same here. It's time for that show to move off the "Limbaugh Legacy" angle and to a regular hosted daily event.

Fatuous analogy. Reagan actually endorsed Trump in a famous clip when they met in the White House in the Eighties. By contrast, the Democrats have traded FDR and JFK FOR Marx, Lenin, Stalin and Mao, so who did worse?

Reagan’s biggest mistake - AMNESTY.

This boil has been growing since the amnesty disaster and needs to be lanced, and Trump’s the man to do it.

Trump better?

Did Trump win a Cold War?

Did Trump tame an inflation monster? (To the degree it was under Carter?)

Did Trump win 49 out of 50 states?

Concur.

Reagan was a populist. Smoother and better spoken than Trump, but also not as savvy and aggressive as trump.

Yes, it’s a hard call, but generally a fool is more dangerous than a scoundrel. One can appeal to a scoundrel’s self-interest.

Lis Cheney and Kevin McCarthy were NEVER Reaganites. They are more of the Eliot Richardson, John McCain, Gerald Ford, Donald Rumsfeld, Dick Cheney mold. A completely different animal. Better than Chuck Percy, Lowell Weicker, Arlen Specter and Bob Packwood, but not much.

All of the pretend to be conservatives are outing themselves.

This is another major gift from President Trump, the self outing of these anti America bastards.

At the time I did not like Reagan. He handled the Soviets very well and made the press look stupid, but overall he did not impress me. He failed miserably in responding to the Beirut Bombing. As a Marine I was pissed that he did so little in response, especially knowing it was Iran who funded the bombing. By this stage in my life I had left the RAT party for the GOP, so I voted for Reagan, but did not like him. The GOP were the pro-military party and the RAT part was the landing pad for all the former hippies.

In the end Trump was a disappointment on handling the budget, he went along with growing the debt pretty much inline with Obama, but his other policies were what made me support him.

Until Trump ran for office, Reagan was THE ONLY Republican in the last 30 years we didn't have to hold our noses to vote for... so this is bullsh*t...

Reagan was us... he was our Trump from an earlier time.

Yes, we held our noses to vote for Bush...

And Romney...

And McCain...

But not for Trump or Reagan... both men represented the people... and both men in their time were looked down on by party 'elites'... Pick up a history book Albert Hunt ...

This newest trial balloon meme is a lie...

Republicans have dumped Reagan for Trump

Reagan isn't around to be dumped, and Democrats like Al Hunt despised him when he was around. Republicans have finally wised up, and want elected officials who put ordinary American citizens first. That's inimically at odds with what Democrats want, so the slander continues.

I agree. I admire President Trump just as I admired President Reagan.

President Reagan, I believe, told Donald Trump to run for president. He saw a quality in him.

And Liz Cheney can go ... well, you know. She is on the wrong side of history.

The author does not know the difference between a Reagan conservative and a Neocon. Cheney et al were or are neoconservatives not at all in the Reagan mold. This author should go back to reporting on Congress members favorite recipes as he does not know politics.
